(Dec. 16, 2000)--DULUTH, Minn. -- Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) scored on a layup with 0:05 to play to break a 75-75 tie and give the third-ranked North Dakota a 77-75 win over 24th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in non-conference women's basketball on Saturday. North Dakota remained unbeaten at 9-0 overall with the win. For Minnesota-Duluth, the loss snapped a 22-game home winning streak.
Minnesota-Duluth (5-4 overall) trailed 75-72 with less than a minute to play, but tied it at 75 with 23 seconds left on a three-point play (two-point field goal and free throw) by Bulldogs' forward Kim Toewe.
LeCuyer then broke the tie on a pass from Sioux guard Jenny Hoffner (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Minnesota-Duluth called a timeout with 0:04 left to try and set up a potential game-winning three-point shot attempt, but the Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off.
Minnesota-Duluth had two eight-point leads in the first half, the last at 29-21 with 7:10 to play, but the Sioux outscored the Bulldogs 19-9 to take a 40-38 halftime lead. North Dakota then scored nine of the first 11 points in the second half to lead 49-40, and the Sioux extended the lead to 10 points (57-47) with 13:24 to play. UND still led by nine (69-60) with 5:09 to play, but Minnesota-Duluth got two three-pointers from Katie Pavlich and a pair of baskets from Kate Madrinich to help rally the Bulldogs to the tie at 75 in the final minute.
LeCuyer scored a game-high 23 points and tied a career high by grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. She set her personal rebounding best in UND's previous game (last Saturday's 89-59 win over Augustana).
Four other Sioux players joined LeCuyer in double-figure scoring, with Mandy Arndtson (Sr., Austin, Minn.) tallying 14 points, Hoffner recording 12 points on four three-pointers, and Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) and Janel Palbicki (So., Bloomington, Minn.) notching 10 points each. Kim Toewe led Minnesota-Duluth with 20 points.
UND shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and held Minnesota-Duluth to 44.1 percent (26-of-59) shooting from the field. The Bulldogs shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line, while the Sioux shot just 60 percent (12-of-20) from the line.
North Dakota will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on Thursday with a 7 p.m. home game against Minnesota-Crookston at the Hyslop Sports Center.
