GREELEY, Colo. - UND forward Jenny Boll (So., Crookston, Minn.) scored a on a driving layup and converted a free throw with 25 seconds remaining to break a 70-70 tie and lead third-ranked North Dakota (12-0, 4-0) to a 75-70 win over Northern Colorado (6-5, 1-2) in NCC women's basketball on Saturday.
Northern Colorado had tied the game at 70-70 with 53 seconds left when Bears' guard Jeanna Stewart hit one of two free throws. The Sioux called a timeout with 43 seconds left, and Boll made the game-winning shot 18 seconds later.
After Boll's play, Northern Colorado's Jill Fadenrecht put up a shot in the lane with 12 seconds left but missed and the Sioux's Becky Moen (So., Morris, Minn.) grabbed the rebound and dribbled to half court before passing to Jenny Hoffner (Brooklyn Park, MN), who was fouled and made two clinching free throws with five seconds left.
Boll, who scored 19 points to lead UND, scored eight of her points in the final 4:22. The game was tied at 61-61, when the Bears' Julie Bentson hit a three-pointer to make it 64-61 UNC with 4:34 left. Boll then drew a foul on UNC's leading scorer, Missy Borell, her fifth, and made two free throws to bring UND within one at 64-63 with 4:22 left.
UND's Theresa LeCuyer (Sr., Anoka, MN) hit a 15-foot jumper from the left side with 3 minutes left to give the Sioux a 65-64 lead, but 30 seconds later LeCuyer was called for her fifth foul on an offensive charge. She also was given a technical foul on the play. UNC's Chyrisse Domenico made one of two technical free throws to tie it at 65-65. UNC maintained possession and broke the Sioux's full-court pressure with a layup by Lindsey Ruff that made it 67-65 Bears with 2:19 left.
In the first half, there were five lead changes and several scoring runs by each team. Northern Colorado led 6-0, but the Sioux went on a 10-2 run and led 10-8 with 15:38 to play. The Bears responded with a 10-4 run to take an 18-14 lead.
Next it was UND's turn. The Sioux went on a 16-6 run to take a 30-24 lead with 5:19 to play in the half, but Northern Colorado came right back with a 12-5 run and led 36-35 with 34 seconds left. LeCuyer hit four free throws in the final 19 seconds to give UND a 39-36 lead, but Fadenrecht converted a three-point play (basket and free throw) after being fouled by Tonia Jones (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) with five seconds left to tie the score, 39-39, at halftime.
Boll had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her 19 points. LeCuyer had 17 points and Hoffner added 14 for the Sioux. Fadenrecht had a career-high 22 points for Northern Colorado. The Sioux outrebounded the Bears, 44-35.
