GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team (25-3 overall) has been designated as the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II North Central Region championships and will play host to the six-team North Central regional tournament Friday through Sunday at the Hyslop Sports Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
The NCAA Division II women’s tournament features 48 teams in eight regions. Six teams qualify for each regional, and the eight region winners will advance to the Elite Eight in Rochester, Minn., from March 21-24.
UND won the North Central Conference regular season title for the seventh time and also won the NCC’s Wells Fargo Finals conference tournament this past weekend. As the top seed in the regional, UND received a first round bye. The Sioux will play in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday’s game between Southwest (Minn.) State and St. Cloud State.
This is the 20th year that the NCAA has sponsored a Division II women’s basketball championship tournament, and it will be North Dakota’s 15th NCAA tournament appearance (12th consecutive).
It will be the eighth time that UND has been host for an NCAA regional. North Dakota was last host for the regional in 1999. The Sioux have a 23-11 record in NCAA postseason play and won national championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
