Women ranked number two in preseason poll

Grand Forks, ND — The University of North Dakota women's basketball team is ranked number two in the nation in the preseason USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Fighting Sioux, which finished 29-4 last season and advanced to the Division national championship game, received one first-place vote. Topping the rankings is Cal Poly Pomona, the 2001 national champion. The Broncos defeated UND, 87-80, in overtime in last spring’s national championship game in Rochester, Minn.

Rounding out the top 10 are Delta State, Columbus State, Bentley, Southern Indiana, Emporia State, North Dakota State, Shippensburg and Bloomsburg.

The Sioux are scheduled to face two teams that are ranked in the top 25 this season. UND will face eighth-ranked North Dakota State on Jan. 4, 2002, in Grand Forks and Feb. 1, 2002, in Fargo. On Dec. 12, North Dakota will host 16th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.

Other 2001-02 opponents who weren't ranked but received votes in the poll include Fort Valley State, St. Cloud State, Augustana and South Dakota.
