Grand Forks, ND - The North Dakota State Bison used their inside size advantage to outrebound the University of North Dakota, 45-30, and went on to defeat the Fighting Sioux, 79-75, on Friday night in front of 5,409 fans at Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, snapping UND's 26-game home win streak. NDSU post players Angela Mayo, Janna Davis and Leah Klabo combined to score 42 points and grab 25 rebounds, eight of the rebounds coming on the offensive end. North Dakota held a 40-35 halftime lead, but NDSU opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 47-45 lead. It was a lead the Bison would never give up. North Dakota falls to 11-2, 3-2 in the NCC, with the loss. North Dakota State improves to 10-3, 3-2 in the NCC.
The Sioux led for most of the opening 20 minutes, but weren't able to ever extend their lead beyond six points. Both times the Bison fell behind by six points, they had an answer. After a field goal by UND's Janel Palbicki gave the Sioux a 19-13 lead with 12:45 to play, Davis answered inside for NDSU. When a Becky Moen put North Dakota ahead 25-19 with 9:38 to play, NDSU's Donni Luecke hit a 3-pointer of her own to close the gap to three points.
Tied at 35 with 3:33 to play in the first half, the Sioux held NDSU scoreless up to the break and got a basket from Mary Perrizo, a free throw from Trish Fleming and a basket from Moen with two seconds to play to go to the locker room up 40-35.
UND's Jenny Boll led all scorers with 13 first-half points, coming on 5-of-9 shooting. She also had five rebounds and three steals. Moen had nine points and also grabbed five boards. NDSU was led by Davis, who had 10 points and six boards, and Mayo, who had eight points and five rebounds. The Bison had a 21-17 rebounding advantage.
After a Mayo basket tied the score at 45 with 16:56 to play, a Luecke layup gave the Bison the lead they would never give up. Leah Klabo came right back with a layup of her own to give NDSU a 49-45 lead with 16:00 minutes to play.
The lead grew as large as eight and was still at eight, 74-66, with 4:49 to play when the Sioux made a final push. A three-point play by Boll with 3:39 to play cut the lead to 75-71. Klabo answered for NDSU 23 seconds later to increase the Bison lead to six, 77-71. UND came back with two straight baskets by Fleming and Boll to cut the lead to 77-75 with 55 seconds to play.
After an NDSU timeout with 38 seconds to play, UND forced a Bison turnover. But the Sioux turned the ball back to NDSU near the midcourt line and the Bison's Angie Froehlich was fouled. The sophomore guard made one-of-two free throws with 11 seconds to play and Boll's 3-point attempt at the other end was off the mark. Klabo hit one-of-two free throws with two seconds remaining to give NDSU its four-point margin of victory.
Boll finished with 24 points and eight rebounds for North Dakota. Moen had 22 points and six rebounds, while Perrizo had 13 points and five steals. Davis led NDSU with 16 points and 12 boards. Mayo had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Klabo had 12 points and five rebounds. Beth Bue also finished in double figures for the Bison, hitting 3-of-3 3-point shots and finishing with 11 points.
The loss snapped UND's 26-game home win streak. It was North Dakota State that had handed UND its last home loss on Feb. 4, 2000.
North Dakota plays again next weekend when the Sioux travel to South Dakota and Morningside.
