Vermillion, SD – South Dakota’s Mandy Koupal scored a game-high 26 points to lead four Coyotes in double figures as South Dakota defeated North Dakota, 89-77, in North Central Conference women’s basketball on Friday night. North Dakota led 21-15 with 9:16 remaining in the first half but USD closed on a 23-8 run to take a 38-29 halftime lead. The Sioux would get as close as three in the second half, 53-50, but the Coyotes shot 54.8 percent in the final 20 minutes to maintain their lead. The Sioux fell to 11-3 overall, 3-3 in the NCC, while South Dakota improved to 10-5, 4-3 in league play.

After spotting South Dakota an early 4-0 advantage, UND came back to take an 8-7 lead with 15:45 to play on a Janel Palbicki layup inside. The lead reached four, 11-7, on a Marisa Leighton 3-point shot with 15:09 to play. The Sioux’s largest lead of the opening half and game, six points, came at 9:16 on a Leighton layup before South Dakota began its half-ending run. UND led 23-22, its final lead of the game, when USD’s Dawn Sudbeck hit a 3-point shot at the 6:18 mark to give the Coyotes a 25-23 lead.

After a Becky Moen jumper cut the USD lead to 27-25 with 4:54 to play, the Coyotes went on an 11-0 run to take a 38-25 lead with 1:03 remaining. North Dakota used baskets by Palbicki and Trish Fleming to cut the South Dakota halftime lead to 38-29.

Palbicki led UND in the opening half with 10 points and eight rebounds in 11 minutes as she filled in for starter Jenny Boll, who played only four first-half minutes after committing two early fouls. Leighton had seven points and Moen six at the half.

Koupal gave South Dakota a 12-point lead, 43-31, with 18:27 to play before North Dakota went on a 19-10 run to close to within three, 53-50, at the 12:25 mark. But that would be as close as the Sioux would come. USD’s Amanda Iverson and Stacey Schooley answered to give USD a 57-53 lead. Koupal had a three-point play to give South Dakota a 62-52 lead and the Sioux would not get closer than seven the rest of the way.

After shooting just 31.4 percent in the first half, the Sioux shot 55.2 percent in the second half, but could not close the deficit as the Coyotes hit 17-of-31 second-half shots. North Dakota held a 37-35 rebounding advantage.

Moen led North Dakota with 18 points. Palbicki matched a career-high with 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Boll scored all 15 of her points in the second half, while Leighton finished with 14. Mary Perrizo had six points, five assists and a career-high seven rebounds.

The Sioux will be back in action on Saturday night when they play at Morningside, a loser to North Dakota State on Friday night. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
