Grand Forks, ND - The North Dakota Fighting Sioux women's basketball team shot 59.4 percent in the first half while holding St. Cloud State to 21.2 percent first-half shooting to take a commanding 48-20 halftime lead on its way to an 89-70 victory over the Huskies on Friday night in Grand Forks, N.D. Junior Becky Moen scored 17 points in the first half and 31 for the game as the Sioux shot 49.2 percent for the game. The win improved the Sioux, ranked No. 4 in the latest national poll, to 12-3 for the season, 5-3 in the North Central Conference. St. Cloud State fell to 9-7 overall, 4-4 in the NCC.

North Dakota never trailed in the game as Moen, who scored a career-high 44 points in the Sioux's last game, a 103-77 victory over Morningside last Saturday night, knocked down the first of what would be six 3-point field goals just 32 seconds into the game to give the Sioux an early 3-0 lead. A sophomore Mary Perrizo layup 30 seconds later put UND up 5-0 and the Sioux were off and running. Moen scored eight of the Sioux's opening 14 points, but it was a team effort that put the Sioux up 20-10 with 9:57 to play. At that point five UND players had scored at least two points. The double digit lead would never be relinquished.

The first-half lead reached 20 points, 34-14, on a junior Jenny Boll free throw and would eventually reach a half-high 28 points when Perrizo hit a 3-point shot with six seconds remaining in the half to send the Sioux to the locker room with a 48-20 lead. Moen had 17 first half points and added five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Marisa Leighton added six points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Boll and freshman Gina Britz also added six points.

For the half the Sioux hit 19-of-32 field goal attempts (.594), 8-of-14 from 3-point range, while the Huskies hit just 7-of-33 (.212) from the field and missed their only 3-point attempt. North Dakota had a 24-18 advantage on the boards.

St. Cloud State opened the second half on a 12-3 run to close to within 51-32 with 17:10 to play. UND's junior Megan Pick answered with a 3-point shot and Moen hit two free throws to bump the lead back up to 24, 56-32, and the Sioux cruised from there. The second-half lead remained at least 20 points until a late St. Cloud State push closed the gap to 16 points, 82-66. From that point the Sioux finished the game on a 7-4 run to close out the game.

Moen finished with a game-high 31 points and now has 75 points in her last two games. It was her third game of the season scoring at least 30 points. Moen hit 9-of-18 field goals, 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and 7-of-8 free throw attempts. She also had six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Boll hit 7-of-10 shots and 6-of-7 from the line to finish with 20. She also had six boards, three assists and two steals. Leighton posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while also adding seven assists. The 11 rebounds and seven assists were both career highs.

A total of 10 players scored for the Sioux, who had 24 assists for the game versus just 12 turnovers.

St. Cloud State was led by Katie Huschle who finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Celestine Frank was the only other Husky in double figures with 11. St. Cloud State’s leading scorer, Tina Schreiner, who came in averaging 20.8 points and 9.6 rebounds, finished with eight points and six boards.

North Dakota is back in action tomorrow night when the Sioux play MSU-Mankato, an 80-66 loser at North Dakota State on Friday night.
