Grand Forks, ND - University of North Dakota juniors Becky Moen and Jenny Boll combined to score 55 points as the Fighting Sioux defeated MSU-Mankato, 91-65, in North Central Conference action on Saturday night. Moen finished with 28 points, seven assists and five rebounds while Boll hit 11-of-13 shots and all five of her free throws to finish with a career-high 27 points. She also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, her fifth double-double on the season and the 11th of her career. North Dakota, ranked fourth in the nation, won its third straight game to improve to 14-3 overall, 6-3 in the NCC. MSU-Mankato dropped to 9-9, 4-5 in league play.
The Mavericks controlled the game in the opening minutes, going up by four, 11-7, with 16:19 to play in the first half on a Susan Salonek 3-pointer. But four would be MSU's largest lead of the game. Boll and Moen answered for UND to tie the score at 11 with 15:04 to play. Moen then hit again, this time on a driving layup to give UND a lead it wouldn't give up the remainder of the game. Two free throws by Boll gave the Sioux their first double-digit lead, 28-18, with 8:03 to play. A three-point play by freshman Chelsea Hausauer with 46 seconds to play in half put the Sioux up 45-33 at the break.
Moen scored 17 of her 28 points in the opening 20 minutes, Boll 15. Hausauer came off the bench to hit her only shot and finish with five poinits. Sophomore Marisa Leighton added four points and three assists.
Salonek led the Mavericks, scoring 13 points while hitting 4-of-5 from the field, 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and all three of her free throws.
North Dakota shot 50.0 percent in the opening half to MSU's 33.3 percent and dominated the boards, grabbing 28 - nine on the offensive end - to the Mavericks' 12.
A spurt by MSU-Mankato in the opening minutes of the second half pulled the Mavericks to within 10, 54-44, but UND went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 66-44 lead and put the game out of reach. The second-half lead would reach as high as 36 points, 87-51, on a Boll layup with 4:50 to play before the Mavericks finished the game on a 14-4 run to make the final score 91-65.
In addition to Moen and Boll's 55 points, Leighton hit 6-of-7 shots to finish with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Mary Perrizo finished with seven points and six rebounds. Hausauer finished with six, while junior Janel Palbicki had four points, nine rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes off the bench.
UND shot 50.7 percent for the game while holding the Mavericks to 30.4 percent. The Sioux finished with a huge advantage on the boards, grabbing 55 to MSU's 32. UND's starters combined to shoot 63.0 percent from the field for the game.
MSU-Mankato was led by Salonek's 13, while Jenny Groom had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Stolba also added 12 points.
North Dakota will be on the road next weekend. The Sioux will play at Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, Jan. 25, and at Northern Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 26.
