Omaha, NE - The Fighting Sioux women’s basketball team improved to 15-3 on the season, 7-3 in the North Central Conference, with an 84-71 road victory at Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night. Juniors Becky Moen and Jenny Boll led North Dakota with 25 and 19 points, respectively, as UND shot 50.0 percent from the field. The Sioux led 42-30 at the half. Nebraska-Omaha fell to 7-14 overall, 3-7 in the NCC.

UNO went up 2-0 on a Tanya Hammes layup 40 seconds into the game, but that would be the Mavericks’ only lead of the game. Moen scored inside and junior Trish Fleming hit a 3-point shot one minute later to put the Sioux up 5-2 and North Dakota was off and running. A Moen 3-point shot at the 10:26 mark gave UND its first double-figure lead, 23-11.

UND led by 11, 29-18, with 7:35 remaining, when the Mavericks made their only run of the first half, outscoring the Sioux 10-0 over the next five minutes to cut the UND lead to 29-28. But a Boll 3-point shot from the top of the key started a 13-2 run to close the half, putting UND up 42-30 at the break.

Moen had 15 points at the break, Boll 10 as the Sioux hit 17-of-34 shots in the opening 20 minutes. UND had just five turnovers at halftime.

The second-half lead grew as large as 19, 66-47, on a junior Janel Palbicki layup with 10:08 remaining, but UNO came back with an 18-5 run over a five-minute span to close to within six, 71-65, with 5:35 to play. Palbicki answered with a jumper to get the lead back to eight, 73-65.

With the lead at seven, 75-68, sophomore Mary Perrizo made the biggest defensive play of the game. After a missed free throw by the Sioux, the Mavericks pushed the ball up the court and had a 3-on-2 break when Perrizo stole a crosscourt pass that would have resulted in a layup and a five-point UND lead. Instead, UND went on the offensive attack and scored on a Boll layup to put North Dakota up nine, 78-69, with 3:11 to play and put the game away.

In addition to Moen and Boll, Palbicki finished in double figures with 13 points, as did Fleming, who finished with 10. Sophomore Marisa Leighton and Palbicki both had a team-high six rebounds. Boll had four rebounds, which give her 500 career boards.

North Dakota, which was outrebounded 36-32, finished with just 13 turnovers.

The Sioux will travel to Northern Colorado on Saturday to face the Bears, a 65-54 upset winner over North Dakota State on Friday night.
