Greeley, CO - University of North Dakota junior Jenny Boll scored her 1,000th career point and scored 21 for the game to lead the Fighting Sioux to a 75-61 road victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday night. Boll grabbed her 500th career rebound on Friday night in UND’s victory at Nebraska-Omaha. She became the 20th player in North Dakota history to crack the 1,000-point barrier and just the 13th to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds.
Entering the game Boll needed 15 points to reach 1,000 and she got 12 of them in the first half as UND jumped out to a 36-31 halftime lead. UND took its first lead of the game when Boll hit a jumper to put the Sioux up 7-5 with 16:47 to play, which was part of a 19-5 run that put UND up 21-10 with 11:56 to play. The Sioux didn’t trail the rest of the way.
UND led by 10, 34-24, after sophomore Mary Perrizo converted on a layup, but Northern Colorado finished the half on a 7-2 run to close to within 36-31 at the break.
In addition to Boll’s 12, junior Trish Fleming hit 3-of-4 shots to score eight, while junior Becky Moen had six.
Stuck on 999 points, Boll hit a 3-point shot at the 12:05 mark to put her over the brink. The shot also gave North Dakota a 51-39 lead after the Bears had closed to within nine, 48-39, on a Lindy Kirkland 3-point shot. The Sioux maintained a double-figure lead the remainder of the game.
The story of the game, besides Boll, was the UND defense, which forced the Bears to constantly set up their offense well beyond the 3-point line and take shots with the shot clock under 10 seconds. UNC shot just 33.9 percent for the game, hitting 21 of 62 shots.
Boll scored 21 to lead the Sioux, Moen and junior Janel Palbicki added 14 and Perrizo 13. UND shot 42.4 percent for the game and had just 12 turnovers.
North Dakota is on the road again next weekend. The Sioux will play at North Dakota State on Friday at 7 p.m. The Bison handed the Sioux one of their three losses on the season when they won at Grand Forks, 79-75, on Jan. 4.
