Grand Forks, ND — The University of North Dakota women's basketball team rallied from a 50-35 deficit with 16:20 remaining in the game to shock South Dakota, 83-77, on Saturday night. Junior Becky Moen led the charge back with 36 points. Twenty six of her points came in the final 16:20. With the win the Sioux moved into a tie for first place atop the North Central Conference standings with South Dakota State, a 78-56 loser at Augustana earlier in the day. Both teams are 10-4 in league play with four games remaining to be played. UND improved to 18-4 overall.
With the loss, South Dakota fell to 15-8 overall, 9-6 in NCC play.
Despite playing in front of 3,420 Sioux fans and playing in an arena in which North Dakota had won 29 straight games, South Dakota controlled the first half and the early part of the second half. The Coyotes jumped out to a quick 19-8 lead 10 minutes into the game and stretched their lead to a half-high 16 points, 36-20, with 3:04 to play. Two free throws by UND's junior Megan Pick cut the lead to 13, 44-31 with eight seconds to play, but USD's Heather Nelson scored the final points in the half, tipping in an out-of-bounds pass with 0.4 seconds remaining to put South Dakota up 46-31 at the break.
Moen had 13 points to lead the Sioux in the first half, while Julia Frie led USD with 10.
USD shot 60.6 percent in the opening half compared to North Dakota's 48.1 percent.
South Dakota maintained its 15-point second-half lead up until the 16:20 mark when Moen hit UND's first 3-point basket of the game to pull UND within 50-38. North Dakota got a defensive stop and Moen hit another trey on UND's next possession to get the lead to single figures. Juniors Jenny Boll and Janel Palbicki scored inside for North Dakota while the UND defense held the Coyotes scoreless to cut the lead to five, 50-45 with 13:08 to play.
USD's Heather Nelson answered with a free throw to increase the lead back to six, but freshman Chelsea Hausauer and Moen scored on layups for the Sioux to get within two, 51-49, with 11:52 to play.
South Dakota scored the next five points to go back up by seven, but the Sioux went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take their first lead of the game, 59-58, with 7:43 to play.
USD twice regained a one-point lead, but a Palbicki layup inside gave the Sioux a 66-65 lead at the 5:32 mark and North Dakota wouldn't trail again. Palbicki's basket sparked a 10-0 run for North Dakota that put them up nine, 74-65, with 3:49 to play.
The Sioux hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to maintain their lead.
In addition to Moen's 36 points, Boll added 16 points and 10 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season and 12th of her career. Hausauer, starting in her second straight game, had a career-high nine points while adding a career-high five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Marisa Leighton had eight points and matched a career-high with 11 rebounds, while sophomore Mary Perrizo and Palbicki had six apiece.
South Dakota was led by Mandy Koupal's 20 points and seven rebounds.
