Mankato, MN - Junior Becky Moen scored 26 points and junior Jenny Boll hit 9 of 14 shots and added 20 points as the Fighting Sioux women?s basketball team, ranked #3 in the nation, defeated MSU-Mankato, 89-67 on Friday night. With the win North Dakota maintained their share of first place in the North Central Conference with South Dakota State, an 87-68 winner over Northern Colorado on Friday night. UND improved to 19-4 overall, 11-4 in the NCC with the win. MSU-Mankato fell to 9-15, 4-11.
Friday was the 15th time in 23 games that Moen, the NCC?s leading scorer, has scored at least 20 points in a game for the Sioux this season. She now has 997 career points, leaving her three shy of becoming the 21st player in UND history to score at least 1,000 points. The 5-11 forward also had four assists, four rebounds and matched a career high with five steals in 35 minutes of work.
Boll finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Sioux, while sophomore Marisa Leighton hit 6 of 9 shots to finish with 14 points. Leighton also had eight rebounds and four assists.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early six-point lead, going up 14-8 on a 3-point shot by Hannah Stolba at the 15:49 mark, but the Sioux answered with a 24-2 run over the next nine and a half minutes. A jumper by Leighton at the 6:19 mark put North Dakota up 32-16.
Eight-point runs for both teams concluded the first half. After falling behind by 16, MSU went on an 8-0 run to close to within 32-24 with 4:32 to play. UND came back to score the next eight, going up 40-24 with 2:41 to play before allowing MSU to score the final eight points of the half to make the score at the break 40-32.
Moen had 14 first-half points to lead the Sioux, while Boll and Leighton both had eight.
The Mavericks twice got the Sioux lead down to six points in the early part of the second half before North Dakota slowly pulled away. Up by nine, 57-48, with 9:43 to play, UND went on a 10-0 run to take command of the game. Boll and Moen each scored four points in the run. Mankato wouldn?t get closer than 14 the rest of the way.
North Dakota, the NCC's best shooting team, shot 55.9 percent in the second half and ended up at 45.5 percent for the game. The Sioux held Mankato to 31.8 percent shooting for the game.
Sophomore Mary Perrizo added seven points and three steals for North Dakota, while junior Megan Pick added six points and five assists. Junior Trish Fleming and freshman Gina Britz both had five points.
North Dakota held a 50-43 rebounding advantage and had 19 assists versus just 11 turnovers. Mankato had nine assists and 19 turnovers.
North Dakota plays its final regular season road game on Saturday night when the Sioux play at St. Cloud State, an 82-47 winner over North Dakota State on Friday. UND will be attempting to put an end to a two-game losing streak at SCSU.
