St. Cloud, MN – The Fighting Sioux women’s basketball team shot 55.6 percent in the second half to overcome a six-point halftime deficit and defeated St. Cloud State on Saturday night, 75-65. Trailing 34-28 at the break, North Dakota outscored the Huskies 47-31 over the final 20 minutes to win its fourth straight game.
With the win North Dakota maintained its share of first place in the North Central Conference, improving to 20-4 overall, 12-4 in league play. This is the 13th straight season the Sioux have finished with at least 20 wins. The Sioux are tied with South Dakota State atop the league standings and play SDSU at Grand Forks next Saturday on the final night on regular-season NCC games. St. Cloud State fell to 13-11 overall, 8-8 in the NCC.
Junior Jenny Boll led North Dakota with 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was her seventh double-double of the season, the 13th of her career. Sophomore Mary Perrizo had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, while sophomore Marisa Leighton also added 13 points.
A back-and-forth first half was tied at 26 with 3:30 remaining after the Huskies’ Tina Schreiner scored on a jumper. From that point St. Cloud State closed the half on an 8-2 run to take their six-point halftime lead.
Leighton had 11 first-half points, hitting 5 of 8 field goal attempts. Boll had eight, with no other Sioux player having over three points. North Dakota outshot SCSU 41.4 percent to 28.6 percent, but the Huskies attempted 22 first-half free throws to UND’s six. St. Cloud converted 17 of their attempts, the Sioux four.
St. Cloud State’s Nicole Persby hit a jumper to open the second half to give SCSU its largest lead of the game, eight points. But North Dakota went on a 15-7 run over the next five minutes to tie the score at 43 with 14:02 to play. Perrizo had seven points in the run, Boll had four.
The final two points in the run were scored by junior Becky Moen. The two points put her past the 1,000-point mark for her career as she became the 21st player in UND women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 points. Boll reached the 1,000-point mark on Jan. 26 when the Sioux won at Northern Colorado.
The Huskies retook a three-point lead, 50-47, with 11:15 to play, but it would be their final lead of the game. Moen hit a 3-point shot on the Sioux’s next possession, the UND defense held and junior Megan Pick nailed another 3-point shot on North Dakota’s next possession to give UND a lead it would keep the rest of the game.
The Sioux had chances to put the game away down the stretch, but St. Cloud continued to battle back. Down seven points, 63-56, with 4:35 to play, SCSU scored six of the next seven points to pull within two, 64-62, on a Jessica Abrahams jumper with 2:43 to play. But freshman Chelsea Hausauer answered with just her second 3-pointer of the season to put the Sioux up five, 68-63, with 2:19 to play. North Dakota slowly stretched its lead from that point to win 75-65.
Moen finished with nine points, the first time in 31 games in which she didn’t reach double figures. Hausauer added seven points and grabbed five rebounds, a team-high three on the offensive end, while junior Janel Palbicki also had seven points, hitting both of her field goal attempts and 3 of 4 free throws.
The Huskies nearly shot as well as the Sioux in the second half, hitting 50.0 percent of their shots, but North Dakota hit 13 of 20 free throws in the final 20 minutes to St. Cloud’s 7 of 10. North Dakota had 19 turnovers in the game, the Huskies 21.
Schreiner led St. Cloud with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
North Dakota closes the regular season next weekend as the Sioux host Augustana and South Dakota State.
