Grand Forks, ND – The Fighting Sioux women's basketball team added the North Central Conference Wells Fargo Finals championship to the regular season championship it won one week ago with a dominating 99-61 victory over South Dakota State at Hyslop Sports Center on Saturday night. For the second night in a row North Dakota had six players reach double figures, led by junior Becky Moen's game-high 26 points. UND led 34-25 at the half, then shot 72.7 percent in the second half, putting 65 points on the board to roll to the 38-point victory.
Moen was named the NCC Wells Fargo Finals Most Valuable Player. Moen was joined by sophomore Marisa Leighton, who was named to the all-tournament team. Also on the all-tournament team were Melissa Pater and Shannon Schlagel of South Dakota State, Mandy Koupal of South Dakota and Angie Froehlich of North Dakota State.
Next up for the Sioux is the North Central Region tournament, whose location, times and dates will be announced on Sunday evening at 9 p.m. North Dakota was the #2 seed in this week's region poll, but #1 seed Mesa State, of Grand Junction, Colo., won all three of its games this week, including the Rocky Mountain Conference tournament championship with a 67-63 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday evening.
It appeared it would be all Sioux from the start on Saturday night, as North Dakota jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead over the Jacks, who were playing their fifth game in nine days, four of which were played in the state of North Dakota. Junior Jenny Boll scored six quick points and Leighton five in the early run. But SDSU came back to close the gap to two points, 18-16, with 9:33 to play in the first half.
Junior Trish Fleming knocked down a 3-pointer at the 7:37 mark to open the lead to five, 21-16, and UND expanded the lead to nine, 34-25, by the half.
South Dakota State scored the first two baskets of the second half to close the gap to 34-29, but it was all Sioux from that point. North Dakota hit an amazing 24 of 33 field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. SDSU hit 55.6 percent in the second half, but couldn't keep pace.
After SDSU had cut the lead to five with 19:16 remaining, the Sioux went on a 23-6 run over the next six minutes to put the game away. Moen had 10 points during the run. Schlagel answered for SDSU with a 3-pointer on the Jacks' next possession, but sophomore Mary Perrizo came back with a layup to put the lead back to 21, 59-38, and South Dakota State wouldn't get closer than 20 the rest of the way.
North Dakota led 82-57 with 4:30 to play, then finished the game on a 17-4 run to make the largest second-half margin the final score.
Moen led UND with 26 points, hitting 8 of 12 field goals, 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and all eight of her free throws. She also added a game-high five steals. Leighton added 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Boll had 12 points. Junior Janel Palbicki, Fleming and Perrizo all had 10 points.
Pater led SDSU with 20 points, while Schlagel added 14.
North Dakota shot 55.6 percent for the game, a season-high 58.8 percent from 3-point range. The Sioux also hit 86.4 percent of their free throws, making 19 of 22 attempts. South Dakota State finished 41.4 percent for the game and had 27 turnovers.
