Melbourne, FL - The University of North Dakota women's basketball team, ranked second in the nation, opened its 2001-02 season with a 73-47 victory over Fort Valley State in the opening game of the Florida Tech Classic. Led by junior co-captains Becky Moen and Jenny Boll, who each finished with a team-high 15 points , the Sioux jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and were never challenged in the second half.
The Sioux went up 4-0 to open the game on a fastbreak layup by sophomore Mary Perrizo and two free throws by junior Janel Palbicki, but the Wildcats (1-3), who went 24-6 a year ago, battled back to tie the game at eight with 13:38 to play. That's when the UND defense took over. Using a strong perimeter defense that led to numerous easy transition baskets, the Sioux went on a 22-1 run over the next nine minutes to go ahead by 21, 30-9, with 4:53 to play. Boll had eight of her 15 points in the run, while Moen and freshman Gina Britz had four.
Up 39-17 just seconds into the second half after a Boll layup, Fort Valley State made its only sustained run of the game, going on a 12-1 run over the next four minutes to draw within 11, 40-29. But Perrizo and Moen answered with baskets to put the Sioux up 44-29 and UND would control the game until the end.
Joining Boll and Moen in double figures was sophomore Marisa Leighton, who finished with 13. Perrizo finished with nine, while Britz and fellow freshman Chelsea Hausauer had six each.
The UND defense held Fort Valley State to 26.2 percent shooting for the game, as the Wildcats were forced to break offense on many possessions and attack the Sioux defense off the dribble. As a result, the Wilcats finished with just five assists for the game, while the Sioux were credited with 20.
UND will play Saturday night at 6:30 CST against the winner of Friday night's second game matching the host Florida Tech and Florida Memorial.
