Marshall, MN - Junior Becky Moen scored a career-high 28 points and sophomore Mary Perrizo had 16 second-half points - 18 for the game - as the North Dakota women's basketball team defeated Southwest State in Marshall, Minn., on Saturday afternoon. UND trailed by seven at the break, 37-30, and still trailed by seven, 51-44, with 13:20 to play before making its comeback. With the win the Sioux improved to 3-0 on the season.
UND went up early, 4-3, on baskets by Moen and junior Jenny Boll, but the Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. SSU would hold the lead the remainer of the half as UND was noticeably out of sync on the offensive end. Only Moen's exceptional play - 15 first-half points and six rebounds - kept the Sioux close as she put her entire array of offensive shots on display, hitting driving layups, midrange jumpers and 3-point shots. No other UND player had more than four first-half points.
UND hit just nine of 29 shots (.310) in the first half and had nine turnovers.
The second half would be a different story, mainly because of the play of Perrizo. The 5-10 sophomore, who transferred to UND from North Dakota State, hit five of eight shots, three of four from 3-point range, and made several key defensive plays that aided the UND comeback and gave the Sioux a number of easy transition baskets.
It appeared UND would come out of the locker room and take control early in the second half as Perrizo and Moen combined to score eight points in 35 seconds that cut the SSU lead to 39-38. But SSU wouldn't relinquish the lead until just 5:36 remained, when a Perrizo 3-point shot gave the Sioux a 64-63 lead. The Mustangs would retake the lead, 67-66, with 3:25 to play, but UND scored the next five points - on baskets by Boll and Perrizo - to take a 71-67 lead with 2:34 to play.
Southwest State cut the lead to 71-70 with 59 seconds to play and gained possession of the ball 21 seconds later when UND failed to convert on its possession. But the Sioux defense held strong, forcing a missed SSU jumper with the shot clock running out. Boll grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled with eight seconds to play. The 6-1 junior calmly hit both free throws to give UND a 73-70 lead. A Mustang 3-point attempt from 25 feet that would have tied the game at the horn was off the mark.
The Sioux shot 58.3 percent in the second half while holding SSU to 35.3 percent.
In addition to Moen's 28 and Perrizo's 18, Boll finished with 12, hitting four of six field goals and four of four free throws. Junior Janel Palbicki had six points.
Moen had a game and career-high nine rebounds, while adding three assists and a steal as she played the entire 40 minutes. Her previous career high for scoring was 23 against Texas A&M-Kingsville in last year's Elite Eight. Her previous high in rebounds (seven) came against St. Cloud State in last year's North Central Region semifinal game.
UND was outrebounded as a team, 41-38, and gave up an alarming 18 offensive rebounds.
North Dakota will host Jamestown in its season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. at Hyslop Sports Center.
