Brookings, SD – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team, the newly anointed top team in the nation, defeated #10 South Dakota State, 82-70, at Frost Arena on Friday night in the North Central Conference opener for both teams. It was the 12th consecutive victory in the series for the Sioux and their 10th straight win at Frost Arena. UND improved to 6-0 with the victory, 1-0 in the NCC. SDSU fell to 8-2, 0-1 in the NCC.
On Friday night the difference was a second-half run by UND which began after SDSU had battled back from a 40-36 halftime deficit to tie the game at 45 with 14:29 to play. Tied at 45, the Sioux went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:27 to take a 54-45 lead. SDSU stopped the string of points, but the run continued for UND as it outscored SDSU 28-9 over an 11-minute stretch to take a 73-54 lead with 3:38 to play. The Jacks hit four 3-point field goals down the stretch to cut the UND lead to seven, 77-70, with 29 seconds to play, but the Sioux hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 24 seconds to secure the victory.
North Dakota, which started a freshman, two sophomores and two juniors and played the entire game with an eight-player rotation, was led by its two sensational juniors, Jenny Boll and Becky Moen. Boll finished with her second double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The 6-1 forward also had three steals, two blocks and two assists and hit 10-of-15 field goal attempts in 39 minutes of action. Moen finished with 24 points, her fourth straight game with at least 20 points, while playing 37 minutes. While her other high-scoring games were the result of hot shooting from the field, Moen hit just 6-of-25 shots, but hit 11-of-11 free throws. The 5-11 forward also had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The first half had 10 lead changes as both teams combined for 22 3-point attempts. UND was led early by Boll and Moen, who combined to score 14 of UND’s 16 first-half points as the Sioux took an early 16-15 lead. The lead would grow to nine, 24-15, on a Moen 3-pointer to 10:21 to play, but SDSU answered with a 12-2 run to take a 27-26 lead with 6:37 to play. Boll responded with a hook shot in the lane to retake the lead for the Sioux and UND would go in to the locker room with a 40-36 lead.
A Mary Perrizo 3-pointer with 18:13 remaining in the game gave the Sioux a 45-38 lead. The Jacks would score the next seven points to tie the score at 45 before UND went on its run.
Juniors Megan Pick and Janel Palbicki added eight points, as did freshman Gina Britz. Perrizo added five, sophomore Marisa Leighton four and freshman Chelsea Hausauer, who started her first career game, three.
UND outrebounded SDSU 50-42. In addition to Boll’s 11, Leighton grabbed nine, Hausauer eight and Moen seven.
UND shot just 40.0 percent, down from its season mark of 47.7 percent, but the Sioux defense held the Jacks, which had been shooting 46.2 percent and scoring 90.2 points per game for the season, to 33.3 percent shooting.
Aided by Moen’s perfect night from the line, UND hit 25-of-28 free throw attempts. SDSU hit 13-of-19 attempts.
The Sioux will take their perfect record and #1 ranking to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Saturday night where they’ll face Augustana (5-2, 1-0), a 66-63 victor over North Dakota State on Friday night.
