Sioux Falls, SD – The Fighting Sioux women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday night at Augustana, 72-65 in overtime. The Sioux took possession of the ball with 19 seconds remaining in regulation play and the score tied at 55, but junior Jenny Boll was tied up in the lane with two seconds remaining as she drove in for a potential game-winning shot. Augustana scored eight of the first nine points in overtime to take a 63-56 lead with 2:26 to play and the Sioux never got closer than five points the rest of the way as the Vikings hit 9-of-11 free throws in the last 1:34. UND dropped to 6-1 with the loss, 1-1 in the North Central Conference. Augustana improved to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in the NCC.
UND took a six-point lead, 13-7, in the game's opening eight minutes. The six-point margin would be the largest lead for either team in regulation play in a game that was close throughout. Augustana battled back to take a five-point lead, 22-17, with 2:21 to play, but UND scored the final four points of the half on baskets by freshman Chelsea Hausauer and Boll to go into the locker room down 22-21.
The second half would be back and forth, with the fifth tie of the half coming when Augustana's Tamera Oltmanns hit a free throw to tie the score at 50 with 2:20 to play. The Vikings took a 53-50 lead with 1:40 to play on a layup by Charissa Sheppard. Two made free throws by junior Becky Moen cut the lead to 53-52, but Oltmanns came back and hit a layup with 1:08 to play to put the Vikings back up by three, 55-52.
On the next UND possession, sophomore Marisa Leighton made Augustana pay for dropping her defender into the lane to double Boll when she hit a 3-point shot with 51 seconds to play to tie the score at 55. Augustana missed two shots in the lane that would have given them the lead and UND grabbed the rebound with 19 seconds to play.
UND's first option on its final possession was to isolate junior Trish Fleming in the post, but the Sioux perimeter players were unable to get her the ball. Boll received a pass at the left elbow with five seconds to play and drove into the lane, but on her shot attempt from eight feet she was tied up and a jump ball was called. Augustana took possession with just under two seconds to play and missed a shot from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer.
It was all Augustana in the opening three minutes of overtime and the Sioux would be unable to come back.
UND was led by Boll, who finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Moen was UND's other double-figure scorer with 12 points. Oltmanns had 19 for Augustana, 17 of them after the half. She had just four field goals, but hit 11-of-13 free throws. Leighton finished with nine for UND and Fleming had eight points and seven rebounds.
North Dakota next plays on Wednesday, Dec. 12, when the Sioux host Minnesota-Duluth at 6 p.m. at Hyslop Sports Center.
