Crookston, Minn. - Juniors Becky Moen and Trish Fleming combined to score 55 points on Thursday night as the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux women's basketball defeated Minnesota-Crookston, 99-88. Moen scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting while Fleming scored her UND-high 22 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds. North Dakota improved to 8-1 with the victory. UMC lost for the first time in five games and dropped to 6-4.
UND never trailed in the contest, but the game was nothing like the 39-point blowout victory the Sioux enjoyed in last year's meeting. North Dakota jumped out to a 14-4 lead as all five Sioux starters got into the scoring column early, but the Golden Eagles never let the Sioux's first-half lead get out of reach.
A sophomore Mary Perrizo jumper at the 8:07 mark would give UND its largest lead of the game up to that point, 12 points, 31-19, but UMC's 15-8 run over the next six minutes cut the Sioux lead to five, 39-34, with just over two minutes to play. That's when Moen took charge, scoring eight points in the final 1:47 of the first half. When freshman Chelsea Hausauer hit a reverse layup at the buzzer, UND had its largest lead of the half, 49-36.
Moen led all scorers with 19 points at the break, hitting 7-of-12 shots. Fleming had eight and junior Jenny Boll six.
UMC was within 10, 54-44, with 16:59 to play in the second half, but the Sioux went on a 17-7 run over the next 4:30 to open a 20-point lead, 71-51, at the 12:19 mark. But the Golden Eagles kept coming back, getting the lead back down to single figures, 89-82, with 2:54 to play.
After a UND timeout to stop the rally, Fleming hit the shot of the game, a 3-pointer from the right corner to put the Sioux back up by 10, 92-82 with 2:32 to play. North Dakota's lead wouldn’t get below 10 the rest of the way.
Moen, this week's North Central Conference Player of the Week, made a strong statement that she needs more hardware for her mantel by adding five rebounds, four steals and four assists to her 33 points. Fleming had three assists and two steals to go with her 22 points and 11 boards. Sophomore Marisa Leighton, displaying a newfound aggressiveness, had 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Boll finished with 10, while junior Megan Pick came off the bench to score seven points and grab five rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Hausauer had five points, four rebounds and three assists and made a number of her usual hustle plays that won't show up in the box score but are the very reason she is averaging nearly 15 minutes per game as a freshman.
UND shot consistently well, hitting 51.4 percent in the first half and 47.1 percent in the second to finish at 49.3 percent for the game. Minnesota-Crookston hit 36.1 percent in the opening half, then warmed up to 53.7 percent in the second half to shoot 45.5 percent for the game.
UND held a slight rebounding advantage, 40-37, while the Sioux committed 21 turnovers to UMC's 19.
Jessica Forsline, UMC's former All-NCC transfer from St. Cloud State, finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles.
UND is back on the court on Friday night when the Sioux host MSU-Moorhead at 6 p.m. at Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The game will be UND's first-ever basketball game in the new facility. The UND men will play the second half of the doubleheader, facing UM-Crookston at 8 p.m.
