Grand Forks, ND - Just 24 hours after scoring a season-high 99 points in its win over Minnesota-Crookston, the North Dakota women's basketball team struggled offensively against MSU-Moorhead on Friday night. But Marisa Leighton's career-high 21 points gave the Sioux the boost they needed to win, 61-49, in UND's first basketball game at Engelstad Arena. The win improved the Sioux to 9-1 for the season. MSUM fell to 4-5.
UND got down early, falling behind 6-0, but came back to take a 7-6 lead at the 17:37 mark on two junior Jenny Boll free throws. But MSUM retook the lead on its next possession and kept it for most of the remainder of the first half, going into the locker room with a 23-21 lead.
North Dakota shot just 32.0 percent in the opening half. Junior Becky Moen and freshman Chelsea Hausauer each had a team-high five points.
Neither team scored in the second half until a Moen 3-point shot gave UND a 24-23 lead with 17:40 to play. The Sioux would not trail again, mainly due to the play of Leighton, who scored 20 of her 21 points in the second half. For the game, the 6-0 forward hit 7-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-4 3-point shots and had three steals and two assists. Moen, after finishing with a career-high 33 points the night before, had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
UND's shooting percentage increased to 42.4 percent in the second half, but was still just 37.9 percent for the game. MSUM shot 42.9 percent for the game and outrebounded the Sioux, 38-27. UND forced 31 MSUM turnovers, while the Sioux had just 14.
The Sioux are now off until after Christmas, when they play on Dec. 29-30. That weekend North Central Conference play will resume. The Sioux will host Northern Colorado on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. and Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday, Dec. 30, at 6 p.m.
