Grand Forks, ND - The University of North Dakota women's basketball team jumped out to a 40-15 lead over the visiting University of Northern Colorado Bears in the game's opening 13 minutes on Saturday night and went on to an 83-60 win, the Sioux's 25th consecutive home-court victory. Junior Becky Moen led UND with 23 points. North Dakota improved to 10-1 overall, 2-1 in the North Central Conference with the victory. Northern Colorado dropped to 5-5, 1-1 in the NCC.
The Sioux showed no post-holiday rust, hitting 15 of their first 22 shots, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range. Seven North Dakota players scored in its opening 40-point outburst, with Moen scoring 12 points and sophomore Mary Perrizo 11. The Bears wouldn't get within 21 points the rest of the way.
UND led 50-27 at the break after shooting 55.9 percent (19x34) in the first half. Moen had 18 points at the break, Perrizo 11 and junior Trish Fleming five.
Northern Colorado opened the second half by cutting UND's lead to 50-29 on a Jill Fadenrecht jumper at the 19:47 mark, but would go scoreless over the next nine minutes. During that stretch, the Sioux increased their lead to 69-29, the final two points coming on a Perrizo layup with 11:02 to play. The Sioux led by 32, 81-49, with 3:27 to play before the Bears closed the game on an 11-2 run.
Moen finished with 23 points, while Perrizo had 15 and junior Jenny Boll 12. Sophomore Marisa Leighton finished with eight points and Fleming seven. The Sioux hit 9-of-19 3-point shots for the game (.474) and outrebounded the Bears 39-32.
Missy Borell had 28 points and 10 rebounds for UNC. She was the only Bear to finish with more than six points.
Leighton matched her career-high with nine boards to lead UND.
North Dakota hosts Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday night at 6 p.m. The Mavericks fell at North Dakota State on Saturday, 94-69.
