Crouse honored

UND senior center Jenny Crouse has been named Player of the Year to head the 1999 Daktronics Division II Women's Basketball All-America team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

UND junior guard Jaime Pudenz was named to the second team.

Joining Crouse on the first team are Angie Hupfer of St. Joseph's College, Jurgita Kausaite of Emporia State, Heather Kearney of Slippery Rock and Julie Fregetto of West Virginia Wesleyan.

Crouse and Pudenz weren't the only players from the North Central Conference chosen for the Daktronics team. Also named was Jayne Even, a junior forward from North Dakota State.

Pudenz the student

Pudenz has been named to the GTE Academic All-America Team as picked by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a third-team pick. Pudenz is the first member of the Sioux program honored since her sister, Tracey, was a second-team Academic All-America pick in 1994. Jenny Walter was a first-team Academic All-America pick in 1992.

Pudenz set a school record for assists in a 96-69 victory against Kennesaw State in Wednesday's first round. The four assists gave her 199 for her career, topping the previous mark of 197.

No simple sample

One of the Kennesaw State players had a hard time giving the NCAA a urine sample after Wednesday's quarterfinal loss to UND. At 10:30 p.m., the player still was trying to give a sample to the NCAA as part of a random drug-testing program. The teams were finished playing at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

NCAA officials reportedly brought the player to her hotel room, hoping to relax her on Wednesday night. She reportedly gave the NCAA a sample later that evening.
