GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team has been slowed the past week by a series of illnesses.
It was hard to tell on Friday night.
The Fighting Sioux put four players in double figures and cruised past the University of South Dakota 94-59 in a North Central Conference contest in front of 3,004 fans at the Hyslop Sports Center.
North Dakota was forced to practice with as few as seven players this past week. Starting point guard Jamie Pudenz was among those ill and was able to see just eight minutes of action.
“I was very concerned coming into the game with our health and with the continuity of the team,” Sioux coach Gene Roebuck said.
But North Dakota was able to adjust to the different lineups, led by Jenny Hoffner. In her spot start replacing Pudenz, the 5-foot-9 junior scored 12 points, including hitting three 3-pointers in a span of three minutes in the first half.
Her performance was made possible by picking apart the Coyotes’ zone defense, which opened the outside game for the Sioux all game.
“We knew they were going to come out in a zone defense,” Hoffner said. “We just tried to knock the shot down if it was open.”
That’s exactly what North Dakota did all game. The Sioux hit 8 of 19 shots from 3-point range and hit 54 percent of its total field goal tries (35 of 65).
