My group consisting of Josh Scott, Scott Owens, Stacy Seiders, Brian Jenkins and myself chose to do the scene on page 60 in Act II.
This is the scene that has the characters the Duenna (acted out by Josh), Roxane (acted out by Stacy) and Cyrano (acted by me). Brian was the director and Scott was the audio/technical director.
This scene was important because Cyrano reflects his true selflessness and shows how much he loves Roxane. In this scene, the Duenna is talking to Cyrano in the beginning and wants to continue talking while Cyrano wants to talk with Roxane. So he bribes the Duenna with food and poetry. Then the two main characters talk of how much Roxane love this one man, one who is brilliant, smart, poetic, brave, and handsome. Dreadfully, Cyrano thought that she was talking about him until she mentioned the handsome part. So she asks him to help her to talk to him and to get with him and he, very unselfishly agrees to help because of his undying love for her.
We chose this scene because this was the first really big scene in which Cyrano makes a grand gesture that doesn’t benefit him.
For Cyrano to help Roxane must be a dreadfully painful thing to do because he loves her so much. But it is that love that makes him help her because I think he would rather help and be a part of her life then say no and hurt her feelings. Also, Roxane already confided so much in him that he must feel very happy to know that they have such a good friendship but nonetheless it would be very painful to help but more painful to not even be asked
