The Norwegian nurse, Ann Mari, is working as a volunteer in the Winter War of 1939/40 between Finland and USSR. At the field hospital she meets Markus, a Finnish soldier wounded during battle at the front. In these tormented surroundings they experience sincere love. When Finland looses the war, Markus home site becomes part of Russian territory. Markus and Ann Mari settles in her home village in the north of Norway - Buvær, and have a daughter - Hennie. In the summer of 1941, Finland again goes to war with the Soviet Union in order to win back lost territory. Markus joins up. The German Army overruns Buvær to establish a costal fort there. Ann Mari is ordered to nurse the sick and wounded prisoners. Finland regains her lost land, but her soldiers are comanded to penetrate further into the Soviet Union. They know they are doomed to fail. Some, including Markus, desert. He throws away his identity badges after an encounter in which his best friend is killed. On foot he begins the long journey back to Norway. Meanwhile, Ann Mari is trying to live as normally as she can, until the day the identity badges reaches Buvær - before Markus. She pines her heart out at the loss of Markus, but there to provide support and comfort is Maximillian, the German offiser.....
The Warrior's Heart was selected as the Norwegian contribution to Regards sur le Cinema Nordique in Cannes in 1991, and is financed by all the nordic countries. The film has a strong international profile, with actor from Norway, Finland and Germany. It was filmed in the beautiful surroundings of Northern Norway - under extremely cold conditions in Finland - at Norsk Film's studio in Jar - and on location in the Oslo region.
