In January 1943, Germany suffered its most bloody loss by the Russian city of Stalingrad. The 6th army was on its way to Iraque with 400.000 men.
The movie follows a group of German soldiers - from victory to hell in Stalingrad. In a short amount of time, the selfassured men turns into animals - doing anything to survive. It's unbeliveable cold, and thousands of German and Russian soldiers fight for victory, but more importantly, to survive.
The war turned at the east front, by Stalingrad, where Hitler suffered his crucial loss. Stalin and his army won a big military, and morally, victory.
At first, the German soldiers demonstrates against the very idea their fighting for. Then they stand up to their leaders. When nothing else is left fighting for, they start the long and unwinable battle against the starvation, the cold and the enemy's bullets. Their only way to freedom is death.
Stalingrad is, without question, the best WWII movie we've seen. It is lightyears ahead of Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line.
