Bands I Listen to
Back to Metal.
Apocalyptica | Blind Guardian | Dream Theater | In Flames | Khanate
Opeth | Sonata Arctica | Symphony X | Ulver | Vörnagar
This is only a selection of the many bands I listen to. I chose these either because they are the most important to me or because I think they deserve recognition or attention. I will probably add to this list later.
- Blind Guardian - Blind Guardian is a folk-influenced power metal band from Germany. These guys stand out in an otherwise stagnant German power metal scene. They sound much different than most of the bands like them. Very, very melodic, with a backing chorus and soaring guitar solos. They sing about a lot of things, most notably Lord of the Rings, but also the church, Stephan King novels, and other various topics. People who don't listen to Metal would probably still like these guys. - blind-guardian.com
- Khanate - I'm mentioning this band as a point of interest. Metal is generally known for being rather fast and technical. Khanate is not. Khanate is filed under the genre extreme doom or drone doom metal. It is almost painfully slow. They tune their guitars very low and generally blow a few bass guitar heads every year. I like to play this on a good stereo and listen to the overtones it creates (especially when it matches the resonance frequency of the room your in). It's kind of bizarre and very underground, but for some odd reason I like it. Not recommended for the faint of heart. - The Khanate web page
- Opeth - Opeth may be my favorite band. As such, they will get their own page where I can talk about concerts and stuff. For now, all you really need to know is that Opeth is a progressive death metal band from Stockholm. They combine an unusual form of melodic death metal with seventies-era progressive rock. The music can range from slow acoustic melodies and moments of pure beauty to fast and powerful moments of sheer brutality, all in the same song. - opeth.com
- Vörnagar - Vornagar is a local band from Los Gatos, California, near San Jose. I'm friends with the guys in this band and I've followed them since their first gig when they were known as Arcanum (I'm even mentioned in the thank-yous in their album!). They play melodic viking death metal, and many people say they sound like Origin combined with At the Gates. Fucking fast. Their drummer has been on tour this fall (2005) with Vital Remains (I kid you not). Anyway, if you want to hear them, go to their website and download their album - they put up the whole thing on their site because they don't care about money. - vornagar.com
