This presentation is aimed at people who are fairly serious about photography. And like most human activities there
can be considerable differences as to how different folks see the issues.

There is really very little difference between film and digital except that digital tends to take longer to achieve high quality prints. Enlarger vs. Ink Jet, vs. Costco, vs. Internet storage. In fact the description of a camera as digital is in some ways inaccurate. In reality a sensor measures light in an analog process and only after the image has been captured on silicon instead of silver does the process become digital.

New Cameras and Lenses (film or digital) have features that make life easier for photographers but do NOT insure quality.

A thorough understanding of the black/white/color darkroom makes adjusting digital files easier.

              Contrast

              Gray Scale quality

              Shadow Values Highlight Values

              Midtone values

Digital is NOT easier than film if you are looking for the best quality.

              Exposure is more critical

Use low ISOs - ISO 100

                           Light Meter

                           Learn to read histogram

High Dynamic Range Photographs of Static images.

Expose for the shadows, check the highlights.

Learn to use exposure compensation controls.

                           Use the appropriate mode

                                         Aperture

                                         Shutter

                                         Program

                                         Depth of Field

                                         Manual Mode

Composition presents the same problems.

What are you photographing?

                           Is it clear?

Where is the light? Is it appropriate?

Where do I focus? What is acceptable Sharpness?

Autofocus / Servo focus or continuous focus

                           What aperture do I use?

What will the shutter speed do to the picture?

What about Flash? Do Ialter the natural light?

A lot simpler in some respects to use, with newer

                           Film or digital cameras.

Conceptual Ideas are still the same.

I wonder if the value of photographs are being undermined.

                           What do photographs really represent.

The digital camera has a few more more controls that need to be understood

                           White balance - tools

                           Settings - Adobe 1998

                           Image quality, jpeg, tiff, raw

Workflow issues

                  Camera, storage, editing, printing.

CF card -handle withcare, format only in camera, they are sensitive to magnetic fields and static electricity. There is recovery software available. Do not expose to hot, dusty, or humid locations.

RAW files provide the best opportunity for maintaining quality

              Photoshop  CS 2

Printing Issues

              Permanence issues
