Gurmat Sangeet Chair
Punjabi University has established Gurmat
Sangeet Chair at Punjabi University Campus as an independent department for the
promotion of Gurmat Sangeet. On 26th March, 2003, Sardar Swaran Singh Boparai, Vice-Chancellor
of Punjabi University, Bibi Jasbir Kaur Khalsa,
Chairperson, Sri Guru Gian Parkash Foundation, New Delhi has been signed a
Memorandum of Understanding for Gurmat Sangeet
Chair. For this Chair, Sri Guru Gian Prakash Foundation has very kindly agreed
to donate six lakhs annual grant for fifteen years. Main
objectives of Gurmat Sangeet Chair :
1. Creating awareness about transcendental quality of
Gurmat Sangeet across diverse cultures.
2. Propagation and development of Gurmat Sangeet.
3. Maintaining authenticity and originality of Gurmat Sangeet.
4. Standardization of vocal and instrumental tradition of Gurmat Sangeet as per
the Sikh Ethos.
5. Comparative study of different traditions of Music with reference to
the
Gurmat Sangeet.
6. Training, Teaching and Research in the field of Gurmat Sangeet.
7. Collection, preservation and recording of Gurmat Sangeet.
Gurmat Sangeet Courses: The Gurmat Sangeet Chair in association with the
University's Department
of Correspondence courses has started different courses in the various streams
of vocal and instrumental music such as :
1. Gurmat
Sangeet Parveshika (Gayan)
2. Gurmat Sangeet Parveshika (Tanti Saaz Vadan)
3. Gurmat Sangeet Parveshika (Taal-Saaz Vadan)
4. Certificate course in Gurmat Sangeet (Gayan)
5. Certificate course in Gurmat Sangeet- (Tanti Saaz Vadan)
6. Certificate course in Gurmat Sangeet- (Taal Saaz Vadan)
7. Diploma in Gurmat sangeet
Gurmat Sangeet Fellowships : For promoting research activities
and preservation of Gurmat Sangeet, senior and junior fellowships shall be made
available to the deserving scholars.
Senior fellowship shall be given to a prominent kirtankaar or a scholar in the
field of Gurmat Sangeet and junior fellowship is for a student researcher.

Archives of Music: The Chair has started the task of preservation and presentation of
Gurmat Sangeet done with the help of modern
gadgets and techniques. Under this
program, an Archives of Music is being established in commemoration of the
chief promoter of Gurmat Sangeet, late Sant Baba Sucha
Singh of Jawadi Taksal.
The Archives will also preserve recordings of classical, sufi and Punjabi folk
music for comparative study and analysis by the students and scholars.
Recordings of some prominent and leading artists in the field of Music are being
preserved in the Archives.
