| Many troops do something
in recognition of Mother's day, which falls within the scout/school year.
Father's day, however, falls in June after most schools are out and many
troops have cut back on their meetings for the summer. And what about
the girls who don't have or don't live with their mothers? Why not
recognize May 15, the international day of families? This holiday
includes parents, step-parents, grandparents, siblings, the whole family
tree.
Many troops recognize individual girl birthdays. What about all those girls whose birthdays fall in late June, July, August or early September? You could lump them all together in a large birthday celebration as the "Summer Birthdays". Instead why not consider a party on June 27th? The birthday of the song "Happy Birthday to you". Have each girl bring a gift of troop equipment for the next scouting year. We all know about the Religious Calendar Holidays, Legal National Holidays, Presidential Declared Holidays and Congressional Declared Holidays. But did you know that until the early 80's only the president and Congress had the right to declare holidays to the calendar. It was determined that Congress was spending far too much of their time declaring and denying holidays and the practice was abolished. Today anyone who wants to can declare and publicize a holiday or awareness/recognition day or period. Have you noticed that in the last 15 years or so you've been hearing more and more about National Pork Month and National Day of the Rose Gardener?? As a result we now have recognition days, weeks and months for all kinds of concerns, health, happiness, dairy farmers, etc. There are many holidays that can be incorporated into try-it and badge work and other troop program activities. The monthly links below list one holiday for each day of the year (with the exception of Christmas eve, no other holiday could be found) Much of this information was taken from Chase's Calendar of Events. A very large and expensive book that you can use at your public library. It also offers a detailed description of each holiday and a listing of every festival held anywhere in North America. |
