Before you start your new website, think carefully about what you are going to include. While a web site can provide valuable information, it can also be a source of danger if details are posted indiscriminately. Pages on the internet can be read by people all over the world. Web designers have innocently included details that identify the girls and the places they go, not realizing that this makes it easy for cyberstalkers who prey on children.
Here are a few safety guidelines to follow.
2. If you use photos and the girl’s faces appear in them, make sure each parent has signed an online permission slip. Also get permission for photos of an adult.
3. Never post details about the place or time of your meetings or trips you are going on.
4. Never post addresses, phone numbers or email addresses of girls.
5. Don’t post addresses for council program events.
6. Make sure you thoroughly check out any site that you link to to make sure the material is safe and appropriate for children.
7. If you have a guest book on your site make sure you have the option to screen entries before you post them.
Also check out child safety on the information highway.
1. Use only the first names of troop members. If you have two girls with the same first name, use their last initial.
Have the girls in your troop take the online safety pledge.
