Our Operations

Under the 20-year concession agreement , GSL Water had to undertake the following:-


  • Operations, maintenance and management of the existing water treatment plants at Gunung Semanggol and  Taiping Headworks

  • Expand the production  facilities at Gunung Semanggol from 46 MLD (million liters per day) to 96 MLD

  • Improve the water supply network by constructing 2 Balancing Reservoirs of 9.0  ML (million liters) each, 9 Elevated Tanks of various sizes from 0.68-2.27 ML and 50 km of pipelines of various sizes from 200-700 mm.


GSL water invested RM 46 Million for the plant expansion, new Balancing Reservoirs , Elevated Tanks and pipelines which were all completed by 1993.Since then , we have continued  our investment program for renewal of obsolete equipment and plant modernization. The total investment since inception stands at more than  RM 52 million as of 1998

As part of our efforts to upgrade and modernize our operations, we implemented the following:-


  • A fully equipped laboratory with ISO/IEC Guide 25 Laboratory Accreditation.

  • A computerized preventive maintenance management program

  • Automatic clarifier  sludge removal system (scrapper / extractor)

  • Fully enclosed chlorine stores with automatic chlorine leak detectors and emergency isolation /scrubber system.

  • A fully functional SCADA ( Supervisory  Control and Data Acquisition) system

  • ISO 9002 Quality Management Certification


Presently GSL Water produces approximately 110 MLD of drinking water for Lembaga Air Perak which is turn distributes to about 300,000 consumers in the districts of Kerian , Larut and  Matang covering  the principal towns of Taiping , Kamunting, Bagan Serai and its surrounding areas

Taiping Headworks began producing water for Taiping town since the early 1900's and is believed to be the oldest water treatment plant in Perak. It continues to supply water to Taiping and sources it raw water from 5 mountain streams located 0.5 - 5.0 km away.


Gunung Semanggol water treatment facilities were build in various stages and is now able to meet the growing demand well beyond year 2000. Its source of raw water is the 7,000 acres Bukit Merah Lake which mainly serves the irrigation needs to rice fields in the district of Kerian
