Spring Flowers

More about our spring flowers.

Last year this was our most successful fundraiser-raising a little over $3,000.  This year we plan to work with a bridging troop.

Goals for the Spring of 2002:  The girls listed some of the problems and would like to make a few changes to the flower growing. They included:

More color variety
Order more plugs in April for only one crop
Try baskets again
Maintain quality by using plugs
Build another shelter for more impatiens

Upper left corner:  Impatiens in our lean-to shelter.  It has a shade cloth on top with plastic sides that can be put on in a storm.

2001 Outcome:
Take a look at the pictures on this page from our first spring crop.  We had sold practically everything by mid May, so we ordered more plugs for a second crop.   Here are some preliminary observations:

  • Deliveries nearly 2 weeks early! We did cut the growing time by using  plugs.  They came shipped from a California greenhouse in excellent condition.  The girls immediately transplanted them into six--packs.  The weather cooperated wonderfully.  We have even raised a second crop.
  • Several planted.  All of the girls pitched in and transplanted.  It is a lot of work to transplant so many flowers.
  • Booth Sales  The Farmer's Market has been very helpful and has helped us with our booth fees.  Sales in June were much better than May.  We need a certain number of people passing by or traffic.
  • Improved Quality  We had the best looking plants that we have ever grown.  Many of the professional growers at the Farmer's Market were quite impressed.
