This is a "Council's Own" Try-It from Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council.  It is not found in the Brownie Handbook.  If you earn this Try-It, you must purchase it from their shop.

This is what we did to earn this Try-It:

We invited Rayna, a Senior Girl Scout who knows a lot about horses, to bring her tack to a meeting.  She showed us her saddles and bridles.

English Saddle

Western Saddle

A halter fits around the horse's head.  It is used to lead a horse while you are on foot, but not while riding.

A bridle also fits around the horse's head.  It is different from a halter because it has a bit which goes in the horse's mouth.   It is used while you are riding.

This is picture of a full cheek bit.  There are different bits that are used with different horses.

Rayna also showed us the different parts of a horse using a picture of her quarterhorse.

Do you know these parts of a horse?

muzzle
cheek
forlock
mane
shoulder
whithers
elbow
fetlock
hoof

chestnut barrel
flank
hip
croup
dock
buttock
tail
hock

We went to a stable to learn how to groom a horse.  We saw how the horses were fed and tacked.  While we were there, we practiced naming the parts of a horse on the real horses.  Then we got to RIDE!

To groom a horse, use a brush with stiff bristles.  Always brush in the direction that the hair grows.

Before riding, clean the horse's hoofs with a hoof pick.

When you ride, you should protect yourself from injury by wearing long pants, a helmet, and boots.

Thanks to these folks for sharing their graphics.
