Act 4

• Antony is calling Lepidus a Jack butt. (He is comparing him to the Jack Butt) 

• At the opening of scene 1, Antony, Octavius and Lepidus all have a list of who they want to kill. 

• Here Antony is being a little Ambitious

• These men are the second trumpery.

• Octavius and Antony have half of the world.   

• Antony marries Cleopatra 

• Octavius the Roman, fight Antony and eventually defeats Antony. 

• These people don't care who they kill.

• Antony wants POWER!

• Antony thinks that Lepidus is stupid and has no plans for him in the future. 

• Brutus and Cassius meet up at a camp near Sardis. The first time Brutus and Cassius meet since leaving Rome. 

• Their relationship has changed. 

• Brutus condemns Lucius Pella for taking bribes. 

• In the old days, to become a soldier, people take bribes and you get paid to become soldiers. 

• Brutus says that Cassius has a itchy pal. (He is hungry for money) 

• Cassius tries to kill himself 3 times

• Brutus's philosophy is stoicism (bad things do not happen to good people) When something bad does happen you let it go. They show no emotion. You keep living your life to the best ability.

• Portia dies because she swallows hot coals. She burns herself from the inside. She was worried about her husband.

• Antony, Octavius and Lepidus kill between 70-100 senators.

Additional Notes

• There are two types of conflicts

• Court world vs. green world (Appolonian vs. Dionysian) City life and society

• Green: nature, the natural world (vacation world) This world is dominated by women. The qualities that women have are creative, birth, imaginative.

• In the green world we get imaginative/ violent solutions to old problems. (chaos) 

• In a tragedy like Caesar the court world is going to dominate.

• In a comedy, the green world dominates.

• The male dominates and to solve our problems we use violence.

• The male society is ordered by logic and rationalization.

• The use of force leads to tragedy, the use of comedy leads to imagination

• Brutus is imaginative but his imagination becomes perverted and twisted by violence and so he starts going down a path that leads to his destruction.

• You need to break the cycle of violence.

• One person just has to stand up and say no.

• "FORCE BEGETS FORCE AND VIOLENCE BEGETS VIOLENCE." The theme.

• Caesar is killed

• Octavius, Cepidus, Antony kill 70-100 senators

• War between Antony and Brutus

• Thousands of people die because of one small violent action.
