Character Analysis for All Quiet On The Western Front

Stanislaus Katczinsky: The leader of the group, shrewd, cunning and hard-bitten, forty years of age with a face of the soil, blue eyes, bent shoulders, and a remarkable nose for dirty weather, good food and soft jobs. In impossible places he finds food for all of the men. He is a cobbler, or shoemaker. He is like a father figure for paul. (3) 

Muller: Still carries his textbooks with him, dreams of examinations, and during a bombardment he uters propositions in physics.A perpetual student and still wants to go to the old life. Hasn't changed into a soldier yet. (3) 

Tjaden: a skinny locksmith of our own age, the biggest eater of the company. He sits down to eat as thin as a grasshopper and gets up as big as a bug in the family way; His wants revenge with Himmelstoss. (3) 

Paul Baumer: The narrator. Nineteen years of age, and all jointed up from the same class as volunteers for the war. Before the war, he was a serious student. He likes poetry and likes to write. He feels the war has ruined him and his future. Kat is his best friend(3) 

Albert Kropp: The clearest thinker among the group and therefore a lance-corporal. The head of the queue of course were the hungriest- little Albert crop. A great soldier. Best student in the class.(3) 

Leer: Who wears a full beard and has a preference for the girls from officers' brothels. He was the 1st boy in Paul's class to sleep with a women. (3) 

Franz Kemmerich: A classmate with Paul. Franz gets hit and he looses his leg. There is little hope for him. He is 19 years of age and dying. Wanted to be a forester. Who a little while ago was roasting horse flesh with us squatting in the shell holes. He is still and yet it is not he any longer. His features have become uncertain and faint, like a photographic plate from which 2 pictures have been taken. Even his voice sounds like ashes. All of the men want Kemmerich's boots. The boots become a symbol. He also has a watch stolen by an orderly.(14-15) 

Haie Westhus: Of the same age, a peat-digger, who can easily hold a ration-loaf in his hand and say: Guess what I've got my fist. A large man and strong person. Was digging peat for a living. Wants to make a career out of the army. When he leaves the army he wants to become a bobby (policeman).(3) 

Detering: A peasant, who thinks of nothing but his farm-yard and his wife; He misses his wife and kids and wants to go back to the farm. (3) 

Kantorek: The school master, a stern little man in a grey tail coat, with a face like a shrew mouse. He was the same size as Corporal Himmelstoss. (10) 

Corporal Himmelstoss: "The terror of Klosterberg."  The same size as Kantorek. He is energetic and uncompromising than the big fellows. (10)
