A piece created with silver clay is pure silver (99.9% silver).
Silver clay consists of fine silver particles, organic binders, and water. It is freely shaped,
dried, and then fired. During the firing process the binders burn away leaving only pure silver in its
modeled shape. The internal structure of fired silver clay adds rigidity to the finished piece not normally
associated with fine precious metals.
There are two brands of silver clay: Art Clay Silver (ACS) is manufactured by the Aida Chemical Industries company of Japan. It is
a family owned company that recycles and reclaims metals, including the precious metals gold and
silver. The other brand is Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and is made by the Mitsubishi Materials Corporation.
I am a Senior Instructor of Art Clay Silver and teach project and certification classes
at Beadit! (Kaimuki and Kailua). Please go to the workshops
page for class descriptions.
