Greg's Journal - August 8th, 2003 - Day 5

We pulled up anchor and headed back over to Prickly Bay where we arranged to meet Winston (9:15 @ Spice Island Marina). The first place he took us was Fort Frederick. Cool old fort built on top of a hill with an awesome view in all directions. Winston told us that Grenada has 6 parishes. We started in St. George's which is where the capitol of Grenada is. From there we went to St. David's which is where we stopped and hiked to a really cool waterfall, about 30 ft. high, and a smaller waterfall that was really more of a slide with a pool at the bottom. The girls and I and Dave & Gail went swimming in the pool with a bunch of local boys while Dawn stayed back and just laid in a shallow part of the stream. It was nice to swim in some freshwater. Our guide's name was Colin. He had a nice dog named Butcher. After that we drove on to St. Andrew's and stopped in Grenville for lunch. We ate at a pretty nice 2nd floor bar/restaurant. I had Lambi stew, which is conch meat, beans & rice, fried breadfruit, green beans, carrots, some fried vegetable that was like a banana only not sweet, and a cabbage salad. Oh, plus a Guinness - yum. Me like Lambi. After lunch, on to St. Patrick's where the island's only chocolate factory is. They only make enough for the island plus a little export. It's basically just a house with chocolate making equipment. A really cool bonus thing happened while we were there - the PRIME MINISTER OF GRENADA showed up! He was VERY cool. He was showing some ladies from New York around the island. One of them said "You don't eat chocolate?" to the PM and he said "I AM chocolate!" Very cool. Basically, the rest of the day was driving back to Spice Island marina in St. George's (1 hour), a dinghy ride back to the boat, and easy dinner, the girls swam some off the boat, and we went to bed.
