Dream a Little Dream...

I often dream a little dream
when too much of a set pattern daily life doth seem;
when I get weary or sad, impatient or lonely,
the dream that I dream renews magical hope within me.
Are you a dreamer too? Do you walk with twinkle dust at your feet
and hold a precious dream within your keep?
The most wonderful dreams evaporate with the morning dew,
but here are some I've held onto, some I'd like to share with you.

Dream 1

After watching "Anne of Green Gables" as a young girl, a dream took root inside of me. That dream has not died, and is yet pitter-pattering in my heart, hoping and waiting for the day of its manifestation. Now then, the dream? That when I am through with my youthful strivings and the hustle 'n' bustle of life, I shall be able to retire on Prince Edward Island (or a place like it, at least) and live as Merilla, Matthew, and Anne Shirley lived. I'd like to own a horse-drawn carriage vice a car, milk my own Jersey cow in the mornings, bottle my own special peach cordial, and see the sunset cast its beauty over my land each day. Each night, I'd be lulled to sleep by the chirping of crickets and the caresses of the soft, island breeze flowing in through the windows of my old Victorian house.

Dream 2

If Prince Edward Island turns out to be too cold, or too modernized, or too remote from my friends and family, then I'd like to rusticate somewhere in Northern California. I want to have my own horse ranch, perhaps even become a horse breeder late in life. Then again, I may even become a 'horse whisperer.' Who knows? Dreams hold EVERY possibility.

Dream 3

For the nearer future, before I retire, my dream is to become a photographer for "National Geographic" and travel to the ends of the earth. I'd like to see and experience the lifestyles of every culture in every nation and document my memories on film. During my travels, I'd also like to pick up several languages and become fluent in at least five of them.

Dream 4

If "National Geographic" doesn't work out, then I'd just as gladly become an animal show host, kinda like Olivia Newton John. Boy, I sure admire that woman. Not only has she been a movie star, a singer, and a survivor of cancer, she's now an animal show host! If there aren't any vacant positions for animal show hosts, then I'd like to just pack up my bags and travel as an assistant to some zoologist/scientist, like Jane Goodall. I could observe animals forever without tiring!

Dream 5

If none of the above happens, then I'd pack my bags anyways and head off to Africa. I have no idea what I'd like to do in Africa, but the movies, "Born Free" and "Out of Africa," got me hooked on going to Africa someday.

Dream 6

If I didn't have to be practical (well, my other dreams aren't exactly 'practical' but...), I'd like to become a professional Korean cultural dancer and travel around the world with a performing group. However, I think my dad might disown me if I tried to realize this fantasy, so I'll just keep it at that--a mere fantasy.

Dream 7

One day, when I've become an experienced sailor and have made enough money to buy my own boat, I'd like to circumnavigate the world. I'd take about two years, or more, and leisurely hit as many ports as I can. Of course, I'd have my own talking parrot on my shoulder for my companion. At the end of my journey, I'd write a book, illustrated with snapshots I took during my travel.

Dream 8

I've always wanted to appear on a comic show. Before Saturday Night Live started going bad (after losing some key comedians to Hollywood), my dream used to be to appear as a guest on SNL, just so I could be a part of their act. I'm not so hot about SNL anymore, so my dream has changed a bit. Now, I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY love to land a role like Elaine in a great sitcom like Seinfeld.

Dream 9

I want to be a good enough poet to publish my own book of poetry someday. I've had several poems appear in school publications, and a haiku published (1992) in a Japanese book of children's haikus, but I have yet to become a good poet. My goal is to produce poetry like that of Emily Dickinson, John Donne, and Rainer Maria Rilke. I want to smoke poetry! On the side, I also want to write several children's books. This has always been my dream since I put together my first 'book' in Sister Bridgette's fourth grade English class.

Dream 10

Finally, my favorite dream of all. When I grow too old to dream, I'd like to settle down in a small, urban town someplace unknown to most people. I'd like to teach in a one-room schoolhouse (if such things even still exist) and be actively involved in the community. I guess this dream is, once again, the influence of "Anne of Green Gables." I once read a story (I'm not too sure, but I think it was entitled "Nisha," which is Alaskan for teacher) about the adventures of a young woman who went up to Alaska to teach in a one-room schoolroom. I guess that story left a big impression on me. Then again, before I even saw "Anne of Green Gables" or read "Nisha," I read the entire "Little House on the Prairie" series and have since always wanted to live the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

DAYDREAM

What a day for a daydream,
what a day for a daydreamin' boy.
And I'm lost in a daydream,
dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy.

And even if time ain't really on my side,
it's one of those days for taking a walk outside;
I'm blowing the day to take a walk in the sun,
and fall on my face on somebody's new mowed lawn.

I've been having a sweet thing,
I've been dreamin' since I woke up today.
And you can be sure that if you're feelin' right,
a daydream will last 'til long into the night.
Tomorrow at breakfast you may pick up your ears,
or you may be daydreamin' for a thousand years...
