Note:  this bird is a relative of the Piping Plover and Semi-palmated Plover, the two latter being shorebirds.  Killdeer are also found in the grassy dunes of Sandy Hook, just beind the ocean.  According to Stokes, Wilson's Plover engages in the same "injured wing" behavior.  Both birds run on foot to escape.
