White-throated Sparrow

Latin: Zonotrichia albicollis / French: Bruant à gorge blanche

White-throated Sparrow on breeding territory at rainforest-like summit of Slide Mountain, Catskills Preserve, Ulster County, New York, 6/23/04 (254kb).  Notice long pauses between song sequences, dueting between two sparrows each with an individual song, one ascending, the other descending.  Pauses between song sequences appears to be much longer in the quiet summit environment.  Notice how exaggeratedly slow the "peabody" trill of the White-throat is in comparison to other birds.  It is like a trill in slow motion. Habitat:  mostly Red Spruce and Balsam Fir.  The first sparrow sings a four part descending song comprised of three introductory notes sliding into the four part "peabody" trill.  The song begins at 4868 herz and descends to 3305. The second bird begins at 3900 and jumps to 5166 slurring down to a four note trill (without the "peabody" accentuation) at 4570 that is almost, but not quite, separated by pauses.  The trill is a continuous sound with the notes separated by changes in volume only.  The second song of the second bird drops one note from the trill.  The ascending song of this White-throat at the summit has a greater frequency spread between notes than in the clip from Perth Amboy giving it a more ethereal quality.  wave836
