the image of a strange person stanging on the side of the road, holding a sign with something cryptic writen on it has always been one of my favorites and can also be seen in another of my writings, Mars. this is a poem i wrote for a creative writing class i took and is in a way an allegory for the struggle of the concreat vs. the imaginary and how man is losing contact with the later.

dream on

lonely and wet
he stands
on the side of the road
with a cardboard sign
thrust out to the world
"to mars or bust"

take me away from it all
he yells
through soggy eyelashes
and watches the red change to green
"go"
something screams
"get away from it all"

through the street he runs
past those too intent on power
to realize his invisible truth
the third world war only he sees
reality is winning
and this lone man would rather live
in the comforts of insanity than
a world so small
that his mind could comprehend
it

so he runs

desperately trying to break free
of society's rigid standards
which tell him to be like everyone else
talk like everyone else
look like everyone else

trusting his feeble arms
to fly him to safety
he jumps off of the world
and finds out there in the dark
what everyone was missing
