Death on the Road

Flashing lights red and blue
The ambulance empties out it's crew
Tending to victims too weak to cry
Hoping against hope they're not going to die.
Oxygen masks, needles and more
Come flowing quickly out the back door.
Mother and son seem pretty bad
Unfortunately it's too late for dad.
The rest of the crew take the other car.
Separated by inches, not very far.
Alcohol is the overpowering smell.
The driver is drunk, that much we can tell.
He looks up with his eyes and picks up his head.
"Oh my God!" he says, "Are they hurt, are they dead?"
Guilt overrides with a powerful blow.
"I didn't see them, I didn't know!
It's not my fault, let me explain!"
Thunder rolls above and it starts to rain.
Loading him in, the sirens turned on,
Mother and son are already gone.
Looking behind a the tragedy,
Man screaming, "This can't be happening to me!"
Mother, half alive, is comforting her child.
She sings softly to him, her voice low and mild.
"Where's daddy?" he asks with a tear in his eye.
She kisses her son and looks above at the sky.
"Shh" she whispers and kisses his cheek.
Pain is overwhelming, she finds it hard to speak.
"Everything is going to be alright."
She says as the ambulance lights fade into the night.

Another powerful poem, and unfortunately it happens.  It is sad, but is another  very moving piece.
