Mai Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city. Located on the banks of the Mae Ping river and is nestled in a valley 310 meters above sea level. The province has a total land area of 10,107 square meters. Chiang Mai is 761 kilometers by rail and about 700 kilometers by road from north of Bangkok. The provincial area, reaching up to Myanmar in the north, is productive valley land and jungle mountainous with the highest peak in the country, Doi Inthanon, is height is 2,565 meters above sea level. The average temperature is cool and very pleasant from October to February at about 20 C, hot during March to May at about 30 'C and wet during June to September at around 25 'C. ![]() |

![]() Chiang Mai History Chiang Mai was found in 1296, by The Great King Mengrai who united many small kingdoms and called the new kingdom As Lanna Kingdom (Lanna means kingdom of million rice fields). Chiang Rai was his capital in 1262 before Chiang Mai. King Mengrai decided to moved the capital down from Chiang rai and decided to build a new city to be the new capital of Lanna Kingdom in 1291. King Mung Rai Has invited his two close friends Called King Ramkhamhang From Sukhothai Kingdom and King Ngam Muang From Phayao Kingdom, to help selected location for the new city. All decided on a productive plain between Doi Suthep Mountain and the Mae Ping River. The new city was completed in 1296. Then Chiang Mai was the capital of Lanna Kingdom for a long time. It was attacked both by Ayutthaya Kingdom and Burma Kingdom many times. Lana Kingdom came under Burmese rule in 1558. King Naresuan of Ayutthaya Kingdom recovered Chiang Mai from Burma Kingdom also Second period it came under Burmese rule again during the reign of King Eakatud of Ayutthaya Kingdom. Thai Peoples Know Thailand was under Burmese rule. The Great King Taksin of Thonburi Kingdom Period ( Thonburi Kingdom was the next kingdom from Ayutthaya Kingdom) , it was recovered from the Burmese in 1774. Since then Chiang Mai has come under the control of Central Thai administration. Handicrafts
Chiang Mai is famous for traditional handicrafts. Each locality has its own particular craft product, such a wood carvings, silverware engraving, silk weaving, celadon, umbrella making, lacquerware and the tribal crafts from the hilltribes. Silverware: Wua Lai road and Road to Sunkampaeng Are traditional center of a Chiang Mai silver smith. The articles of household and ornamental articles include bracelets, webbed belts, neck chains, food trays, boxes, dippers, bowls etc. Lac-querware: The lac-quer-ware center is along the road out of Chiang Mai to Chomthong. Lacquerware is an old craft of Chiang Mai. The process of making lac-querware is from the woven bamboo strip skeleton, then many layers of lacquer are applied. After drying they are polished and painted with astisric designs. Umbrella Making: About 9 kilometers from Chiang Mai city, is the famous umbrella village. The Bor Sang umbrellas are made of Sa paper. and painting the umbrellas with floral designs and dragons. Cotton And Silk Village: Silk and cotton are woven by folk Chiang Mai people on a traditional loom. San Kampaeng is famous for silk weaving. Wood Carving: Hand Dong district, south of Chiang Mai, is the center of wood carving for decorative pieces.
