Amphibious  V
Amphibious Built for the MOD using the SIIa 109" 2.25l models, removable air canisters were fitted and 24v electrics used. 50 prototypes were produced and used in trails in 1963. Pictured here maybe a 1 off project vehicle, it is not the MOD version.

Anti-tank Lightweight  L
A conversion for the Sudan government, this came standard with a 106mm recoil-less light anti-tank gun, blast shields and a split windscreen.

Armoured Assault vehicle  LV
Heavy plating, armoured glass screens and machine gun mounts at both the front and back. Lightweight and GS versions

Land Rover 80" Series I models fitted with Rolls Royce B40 engines for the MOD

Bonnettea (aka Big Lightweight)  L
An air-portable Lightweight vehicle powered by a 2.6L 6cyl petrol engine, weighing ¾ ton. Designed to use power-driven trailers, 3 prototypes produced in 1965.

Carawagon  V
Camper2 A camper conversion by R J Searle Ltd of Sunbury on Thames UK Most common are SIIa 109" vehicles, wood is used to extend the standard roof. The picture is of an unknown model of camper I saw in Northumberland: See Dormobile

Centaur  V
Half track, a shortened version of the Scorpion tank tracked bogie replaced the rear wheels. 6 were built in 1979 based on the Stage-1 with its V8 engine.

Ceremonial Lightweight  L
Vehicles that were used by the Honourable Artillery Company to tow 25-ponder guns used for Royal salutes. A gloss bronze/green colour with chrome bumpers & grill, white hubs, wheel nuts, seats and wheel covers.

City CAB  V
The City CAB stared in the 1995 film Judge Dredd. FC vehicles were fitted with special fibreglass bodies to produce these taxis of the future. Not all of these vehicles could be driven, so were simply props.

CKD
Complete Knock Down - these kits consisted of chassis, engine, axle and transmission, built in the UK for foreign assembly. The recipient's of the kits produced all other components themselves: See Minerva, Santana, Tempo

Constant Velocity Joints
Fitted to the front wheels, enables vehicles to travel at high speed without vibration or damage in four wheel drive

Cuthbertson tracked  V
Four triangular tracked bogies replaced the four wheels on this conversion by James Cuthbertson Ltd, of Biggar, Lanarkshire. This vehicle was developed to be used in extreme soft ground.

Deep Wading Lightweight  L
Specially prepared for the Royal Marines by their own workshops for use between landing craft and the beach.

Differential (Diff)
Arrangement of gears that allows wheels to revolve at different speeds such as rounding corners or when one wheel is stuck in soft ground

Diff Lock
A system that locks the diff, selectable at driver's discretion this stops the wheels revolving at different speeds

Dormobile  V
Dormobile Camper conversions made be Walter Limited of Folkestone Kent. LWB SIIa & SIII vehicles used, a moulded fibreglass, side hinged roof is added. Some vehicles had sidelights remounted so that fuel and water cans could be carried above the front bumper. : See Carawagon

Dropsides  V
Double or singe cab options on the D130 chassis, a flatbed with dropping sides.

DSC
Dynamic Stability Control - Corrects over or under steer by applying braking system in individual wheels.

EBA
Electronic Brake Assist

EBD
Electronic Brake force Distribution - Monitors and adjusts each wheel to maximise braking, ensuring equal braking.

ENV
Type of differential

ETC
Electronic Traction Control - Used with ABS, senses when a wheel is travelling faster than the other and applies brake to that wheel only. Ensures grip on wet or loose surface or off road.

FC - Forward Control
FC 101 Boxy shaped "cap top" vehicles such as series IIb or 101 1-ton. These are also sometimes referred to as the big landrovers, the driving position is above and in front of the engine. See City CAB.


FFR
FFR mount Fitted For Radio - military radio vehicle with 24 volt electrics produced by a 90-amp generator and radio interference shielding. Dexion frames were bolted to the rear bulkhead to accommodate electrical connections and equipment. Here you can see the wing aerial mount indicating a FFR vehicle.

Field Ambulance  LV
Early models had stretcher frames that extended to allow stretchers to overhang the vehicles. The current MOD model is based on the D130 and can carry up to 4 patients on stretchers

Fire Tender  V
The current LRSV built Fire & Rescue vehicle comes with a choice of Soaker System, Fire Fogging or Compressed Air Foam (CAF) utilising the D130 Dropside. Many models have been converted for use as fire tenders from the early days of Land Rover notably the Series IIb FC.

Forest Rover  V
10x28 tractor tyre's fitted and suspension heightened giving increased ground clearance, only 3 produced for the Forestry Commission.

Freewheeling hubs
Used on the front wheels to disconnect the drive from the hub to the axle half shafts

HCPU  V
2002 HCPU High Capacity Pick Up - The same as a regular pick-up but with a wider back body. The picture shows the twin cab model built on the 130" chassis.


HDC
Hill Descent Control - Enables controlled descent of step on slippery declines.

HS
Higher Specification - MOD term refers to the specs of military Land Rovers which are build with stronger components

Hover Rover
Developed in parallel with the first big hovercrafts of the time by Vickers. The Hover Rover prototype required two engines, thus reducing the payload capacity.

A spin off of the Santana Militar 88", these were sold as civilian fun buggies: See Santana, Militar 88"

Lightweight
½ ton vehicle developed for the MOD to be air-portable: See Anti-tank, Bonnettea, Ceremonial, Deep Wading, Ligero, Militar 88"

LRSV
Land Rover Special Vehicles - responsible for many conversions including armoured vehicles for celebrities and royalty. Also responsible for building the current hydraulic platforms, Quadtech, dropside, Fire Tender and workshop models

Llama
8 Prototype vehicles built in 1986 on the FC 101" chassis, using the V8 engine. This vehicle has the appearance of a small truck (like a Leyland 45).

LWB
Long Wheel Base

Militar 88" Lightweight  L
Available from 1970, this was Santana's version of the Lightweight, it was supplied to the Spanish, Morocco and Egyptian armies. The vehicle was heavier than the British Lightweight: See Santana; Ligero

Minerva  V
Minerva Model Belgium company SA Societe Nouvelle Minerva based in Antwerp assembled CKD kits between 1952 and 1956. Steel was used instead of Aluminium, the vehicles had squared off sloping wings and left hand drive. A total of 8,959 CKD were received, the Minerva company was liquidated in 1958: See CKD

Mobile Cinema
Developed as an outreach tool for use in Africa, Series II and III 109" vehicles were used by government education departments, to tour remote villages and towns. These were also used as public address and recording platforms the most popular use was that of Mobile Cinema.

Morattab  L
In their factory at Farsi, Iranian company Morattab assembled a full line of 88" and 109" Lightweight's originally supplied by Santana as CKD kits.

Power Assisted Steering - Standard on all new D models (Worm and Roller - Adwest Variamatic)

Perentie  V
Perentie Developed for the Australian military this twin rear axled vehicle has an Isuzu engine fitted as standard and is available as 6x6 or 6x4 drive. Body styles include a boxy ambulance and a specialised long range patrol vehicle.

Pink Panther  V
This Pink coloured assault/assault vehicle, saw service in the Red Desert with the SAS

PTO
PTO hole Power Take Off - A PTO point takes power from the engine. Examples of this usage are to power a trailer or a winch, the picture shows the location of the PTO hole.

Quadtech  V
A range of "work" vehicles based on the D130 with single or double cab options and a "boxed" rear: See LRSV

Recovery Vehicle  V
recovery Vehicle A straightforward addition of towing equipment to this pick-up creates an off road recovery vehicle.



Road / Rail  V
Vehicles converted to run on railway lines these have been used since the early days of Landrover, currently in use with Metrorail (London UK) to help with underground maintenance

Santana  V
Santana Model Spanish company Metalurgica De Santa Ana of Linares began using CKD kits in 1958. By the time production ended in 1990 all the parts were been self manufactured, with more than 300,000 produced. Santana currently produce its own 4x4 the PS10 which resembles the Defender, and models for Suzuki: See Militar 88"; Ligero

Shorland Armoured Patrol Car  V
Shorts Armoured Car - These Landrovers were converted by Short Bros and Harland, Belfast (aka Shorts). These were used extensively by the MOD during the troubles in Northern Ireland.


Snorkel
Snorkel An after sales accessory used to allow vehicle to wade through water up to windscreen level, a regular Landrover has only a 20" wading depth. The picture shows the location of the snorkel.


Snowmobile  V
Snow Mobile A SWB cab coupled with tracks, I have seen a picture of one but know nothing about it.



Snow Chain
Snow Chain After sales accessory, fitted to vehicles wheels the chain gives better grip in slippery conditions.

Tempo  V
Assembled in Germany from CKD's these vehicles used steel for the body and doors, an adaptation is a locker built into the front of each wing. 1.6L 80" wheelbase and 2.0L 86" wheelbase models were produced.

Trucks Utility medium - military term for D110 type models

Something that is designed to be useful and/or practical rather then luxurious

VKP
Vehicle Protection Kit - appliqué armour fitted to vehicles in trouble spots. Fitted to both GS and Lightweight vehicles

Viscous Coupling
Locks frong and rear prop-shaft to prevent wheel spin on either axle.

-W-
Winch
Winch An after sale accessory used to recovery other vehicles or can be used to help overcome obstacles. A number of version are available.


Wolf  V
Wolf Military high performance Defender XD110. Based on the Defender body but with a chassis from the Range Rover, this is the current LR vehicle in service with the MOD.


Workshops  V
specifically designed vehicles for in-the-field service either D90 or D110 hardtops: See LRSV
