GLOSSARY
Built for the MOD using the SIIa 109" 2.25l models, removable air canisters were fitted and 24v electrics used.
50 prototypes were produced and used in trails in 1963. Pictured here maybe a 1 off project vehicle, it is not the MOD version.

Most common are SIIa 109" vehicles, wood is used to extend the standard roof.

Differential (Diff)
Arrangement of gears that allows wheels to revolve at different speeds such as rounding corners
or when one wheel is stuck in soft ground
Diff Lock
A system that locks the diff, selectable at driver's discretion this stops the wheels revolving at different speeds
Dormobile V
Camper conversions made be Walter Limited of Folkestone Kent.
LWB SIIa & SIII vehicles used, a moulded fibreglass, side hinged roof is added.
Some vehicles had sidelights remounted so that fuel and water cans could be carried above the front bumper.

Dropsides V
Double or singe cab options on the D130 chassis, a flatbed with dropping sides.
DSC
Dynamic Stability Control - Corrects over or under steer by applying braking system in individual wheels.
Boxy shaped "cap top" vehicles such as series IIb or 101 1-ton.
These are also sometimes referred to as the big landrovers, the driving position is above and in front
of the engine. See City CAB.
FFR
Fitted For Radio - military radio vehicle with 24 volt electrics produced by a 90-amp generator and radio interference shielding.
Dexion frames were bolted to the rear bulkhead to accommodate electrical connections and equipment.
Here you can see the wing aerial mount indicating a FFR vehicle.
Field Ambulance LV
Early models had stretcher frames that extended to allow stretchers to overhang the vehicles.
The current MOD model is based on the D130 and can carry up to 4 patients on stretchers
Fire Tender V
The current LRSV built Fire & Rescue vehicle comes with a choice of Soaker System, Fire Fogging or Compressed Air Foam (CAF)
utilising the D130 Dropside. Many models have been converted for use as fire tenders from the early days of Land Rover notably the Series IIb FC.
Forest Rover V
10x28 tractor tyre's fitted and suspension heightened giving increased ground clearance,
only 3 produced for the Forestry Commission.
Freewheeling hubs
Used on the front wheels to disconnect the drive from the hub to the axle half shafts
High Capacity Pick Up - The same as a regular pick-up but with a wider back body. The picture shows the twin cab model built on the 130" chassis.
HS
Higher Specification - MOD term refers to the specs of military Land Rovers which are build with stronger components
Hover Rover
Developed in parallel with the first big hovercrafts of the time by Vickers.
The Hover Rover prototype required two engines, thus reducing the payload capacity.

Suspension used on Landrover models before the introduction of coil springs.
LRSV
Land Rover Special Vehicles - responsible for many conversions including armoured vehicles for celebrities and royalty.
Also responsible for building the current hydraulic platforms, Quadtech, dropside, Fire Tender and workshop models
Llama
8 Prototype vehicles built in 1986 on the FC 101" chassis, using the V8 engine.
This vehicle has the appearance of a small truck (like a Leyland 45).
LWB
Long Wheel Base
Belgium company SA Societe Nouvelle Minerva based in Antwerp assembled CKD kits between 1952
and 1956.
Steel was used instead of Aluminium, the vehicles had squared off sloping wings and left hand drive.
A total of 8,959 CKD were received, the Minerva company was liquidated in 1958: See CKD

Morattab L
In their factory at Farsi, Iranian company Morattab assembled a full line of 88" and 109"
Lightweight's originally supplied by Santana as CKD kits.
MRCV
Multi Role Combat Vehicle
Perentie V
Developed for the Australian military this twin rear axled vehicle has an
Isuzu engine fitted as standard and is available as 6x6 or 6x4 drive.
Body styles include a boxy ambulance and a specialised long range patrol vehicle.
Pink Panther V
This Pink coloured assault/assault vehicle, saw service in the Red Desert with the SAS
PTO
Power Take Off - A PTO point takes power from the engine. Examples of this usage are to power
a trailer or a winch, the picture shows the location of the PTO hole.
A straightforward addition of towing equipment to this pick-up creates an off road recovery vehicle.
Spanish company Metalurgica De Santa Ana of Linares began using CKD kits in 1958.
By the time production ended in 1990 all the parts were been self manufactured, with more than 300,000 produced.
Santana currently produce its own 4x4 the PS10 which resembles the Defender,
and models for Suzuki: See Militar 88"; Ligero
Armoured Car - These Landrovers were converted by Short Bros and Harland, Belfast (aka Shorts).
These were used extensively by the MOD during the troubles in Northern Ireland.
An after sales accessory used to allow vehicle to wade through water up to windscreen level, a regular Landrover has only a 20" wading depth.
The picture shows the location of the snorkel.
A SWB cab coupled with tracks, I have seen a picture of one but know nothing about it.
After sales accessory, fitted to vehicles wheels the chain gives better grip in slippery conditions.
An after sale accessory used to recovery other vehicles or can be used to help overcome
obstacles. A number of version are available.
Military high performance Defender XD110.
Based on the Defender body but with a chassis from the Range Rover, this is the current LR vehicle in service with the MOD.
