ESL Summer School for International Students

The International ESL Summer School Program invites students from around the world to join with Ontario students in an immersion environment consisting of intensive ESL classes, integrated activities and enjoyable and interesting excursions.

Program Format
The program is offered for two, four or six week sessions. Classes meet 32.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Morning ESL classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Afternoon ESL options (elementary) and integrated language arts (secondary) are from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Excursions are included.
Each morning, students participate in classroom instruction and the application of ESL literacy skills. Program delivery is supported by the use of audio-visual resources and computers. Afternoon courses have been developed specifically to enhance language acquisition and application.
Excursions allow students to explore and enjoy many of the popular destinations in Ontario, such as the CN Tower, Paramount Canada’s Wonderland, the Science Centre, Air Canada Centre, Niagara Falls, the Toronto Zoo, Pioneer Village, Kortwright Conservation Area and the Eaton Centre.

Curriculum
On arrival, all students are assessed and placed in classes based on age and ESL language skills. The learning expectations in all courses are organized into four strands:
oral and visual communication skills that require students to understand, interpret and use oral English and related visual cues, in a variety of contexts and media
reading skills that require students to read a variety of informational and literary texts for different purposes, using a range of reading strategies effectively
writing skills that require students to communicate clearly in writing for a variety of purposes and audiences
social and cultural competence that requires students to understand and value their own cultures, to appreciate the variety of languages and cultures in Canada, and to demonstrate social and cultural competence in a wide range of situations
