Kasuhito Yamashita

Born in 1961 in Nagasaki, Kazuhito Yamashita first began studying the guitar at the age of eight with his father Toru Yamashita.

In 1976 he won first prize in the All Japan Guitar Competition. In 1977 he won three international competition;Ramirez in Spein, Aiessandria in Italy, and the International Guitar Competition in Paris, the youngest winner ever recorded.

In 1978 Yamashita made his debut in Japan and one years later he made his European debut. His Canadian debut came in 1984 with an appearance at the Toronto Guitar Festival and his American debut came in 1987. He gave a recital in the Musikverein (Grand hall) in Vienna in 1988.

His sixty CD-recordings and numerous performances of his original transcriptions of such works as Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Stravinsky's Firebirds,and Dvorak's New World Symphony have made him a legend in guitar circles.

He has also recorded sixteen CDs of the complete works of Fernando Sor and a five CD series of J.S.Bach Sonatas Partitas Suites for violin, cello, lute and flute which he transcribed for solo guitar.

He has a huge range of repertoire. He gives not only solo recitals but also duos (with the flutist James Galway, with the Jazz guitarist Larry Coryel etc.),chamber music(with the Tokyo String Quartet etc.) and with several major orchestra (with Leonard Slatkin and the London Philharmonic Orchestra etc.)
