He was taken with the US first women POW Melissa Rathburn-Nealy. Listed as MIA throughout the war. Name: Melissa Rathburn-Nealy Age: 20 Rank: Specialist Released: March 4, 1991 Hometown: Grand Rapids, Michigan Other note: Captured by the Iraqis on January 30 during the "four thrusts" attack into Saudi Arabia. Shot down in a Navy A-6. His co-pilot, Lt. Jeffrey Zaun, was captured by Iraqi soldiers and listed as POW, but Wetzel's fate was unknown until the end of the war. Wetzel was listed MIA throughout the war. Name: Jeffrey N. Zaun Age: 28 Rank: Lieutenant Released: March 4, 1991 Hometown: Cherry Point, New Jersey Other note: Zaun was one of the POWs shown on Iraqi TV with several injuries visible on his face. After his release, Zaun said he injured himself to deter his Iraqi captors from showing his face on TV. |
