Minovsky Physics

Minovsky Particle Effects

Minovsky Fields, depending on how high the concentration is, will hinder all radio waves in the area, and completely block radio waves at 100% concentration. Minovsky Particles will not affect cameras, and any targeting that relies on sight will not suffer any Strike Penalties. All Units and installations that use Minovsky Reactors will put off a certain percentage of Minovsky particles, the higher the output, the more the concentration goes up.

Minovsky Concentration Sensors

Determining Minovsky Concentration

For Earth Environments, roll 1D100 and divide by 2 (rounded up), at the beginning of the day, the rolled Concentration will remain in effect for 24 hours. Earth NEVER has 100% concentration unless a Minovsky Scattering System is active in the area.

In Space, Minovsky Particles travel further, roll 1D100 and modify according to all nearby Minovsky Output Devices. Concentration NEVER exceeds 100%.

When determining the concentration due to multiple sources, use the source with highest concentration in an area. Example: if there's an MS putting off 5%, and a Ship putting off 15%, then the concentration will be 15%. If that ship were to activate it's Minovsky Scattering System, then the concentration would be whatever the system was set to put off.

Minovsky Concentration by Percentage

Minovsky Concentration Max Communications Range Strike Penalty*
0% Device Range Limit 0
1%-19% 1 km 0
20%-39% 100 m x2
40%-59% 50 m x3
60%-79% 10 m x4
80%-100%  Blocked  x5

* Strike penalty only applies to Mobile Units, Vehicles, and Capital Ships within the Minovsky Field, friendly and hostile alike. The penalty for attacking at a ranges greater than Short range are multiplied by the number shown.

Minovsky Output Devices

Output Device Concentration Range Field Range**
Vehicle Reactor 1% to 4% 10 m
MS Reactor 5% to 9% 10 m
Ship Reactor 10% to 19% 20 m
Base Reactor 20% to 24% 50 m
Minovsky Power Plant* 25% to 49% 100 m
Minovsky Scattering System 20% to 100% (Adjustable) 50 m to 100 m

* Minovsky Power Plant usually powers an entire city or a colony.

** Double all Field Ranges if the reactor is in Space.

Field Ranges start at the outside of the Reactor’s Container, so if a Base Reactor is putting out 24% Minovsky, then the 50 m range starts at the outside of the building the Reactor is housed in.

Minovsky Scattering System

Most war ships in the Universal Century are equipped with Minovsky Scattering Systems, which flood an area around the ship with Minovsky Particles. This artificial Minovsky Field can be adjusted from 1% to 100%, and can be maintained at 20% concentration indefinitely. At higher concentrations, the Scattering System can only maintain the Minovsky Field for a limited time. Should the Scattering System be operating at high output for too long, it will suffer an Overheat and automatically shut down. After a shutdown, the system will need some time to cool off before it can be reactivated. The automatic shutdown sequence does have an override, but only the Captain may initiate the override. If the override is initiated, then there is a cumulative 10% chance every 4 melees that the system will burn out. Once the system burns out, it will cause 1D10 x 5 damage to the Main Body of the Ship, and the system must be completely replaced.

Minovsky Scattering System Output

Minovsky Output Time Limit Cool Down Period
1% to 20% Indefinitely N/A
21% to 40% 30 minutes 15 minutes
41% to 60% 15 minutes 30 minutes
61% to 80% 5 minutes 45 minutes
81% to 100% 1 minute 1 hour

Minovsky Concentration Sensors

Most units, such as Ships, MS, MA, and some vehicles are equipped with Minovsky Concentration Sensors. The basic sensors are little more than the Minovsky Particle equivalent of a Geiger Counter, and only display the Minovsky Concentration as a percentage, yet some more advanced sensors can provide more information such as the location of the largest Output Device, or the size of the Minovsky Field. All Mobile Suits and Mobile Armours are equipped with the Basic Sensor, Ships and Bases all have the Advanced Sensors. Hand-held sensors are non-existent in the One Year War, but may show up in later UC series.

Minovsky Shielding

Although it has never been documented in any Gundam UC series, theoretically, some materials could be used to dampen Minovsky Fields that are put off by reactors. The material would be fashioned into a casing for the Reactor, and limit its Minovsky Output to 1%, regardless of the reactor's size. What materials block Minovsky Particles is up to the Game Master, if any, and cannot be any material that is commonly used in unit construction, such as Super High Tensile Steel, Titanium, Luna Titanium, or Titanium/Ceramic Composite. One suggestion for a material would be Lead, and since it is heavy, structurally weak, and had to get in large quantities, Minovsky Shielding would be rare if present at all.
