Background:
The GM Desert Commando was a prototype Mobile Suit built for combat in the
Sahara Desert in Africa. Zeon’s MS-09F/trop Dom Tropen was causing problems for
the Federation’s forces in Africa, and the RGM-79[G] GM Ground Combat Type had
trouble operating in the heat and sand of the Sahara. The Federation’s solution
was the RGM-79J GM Desert Commando, which was equipped with extra heat syncs and
had all of its joints and vents shielded to protect them from the desert sands.
The GM Desert Commando was designed to dispatch the much faster Dom Tropen using
sniping, ambushes and guerrilla tactics. A popular tactic was to burry the MS in
the desert sands and pop up when the Doms got within range of its Double
Barrelled Shotguns, which were used to strike at close range before the enemy
pilots noticed that the GM was even there. Unfortunately, only one GM Desert
Commando was ever produced, by the time its trial runs were finished it only saw
action once before the Federation took the war into space.
